About MSP boost and engine

for a daily driver how fast do you want to go? you dont need high boost to see 13s in these cars, just supporting mods. FMIC, turboback exhaust etc.

i have been looking into this stuff over the last couple months and i have found that there is more than one problem. #1 yeah the timing is too far advanced for more boost it was set up for 5.5psi, so retarding the timing is a must for over 12psi, the second thing was proven by turbo mag when they found that the car leaned out in higher rpms but that is also because of the advanced timing. the msp is also very restricted with 2 cats and small piping along with a weak ass intercooler and that is where everyone should start before messing with turning up the boost. there are many weak points on this car besides the rods, they are the last thing you should think about, because how much smaller can they be than honda 1.8L rods and these guys are pushin anywhere from 18 to 23psi. everyone is making good points it is just that they need to be put together instead of arguing one idea against another. you add up what everyone has said and these cars can safely run higher boost and lower ets. free up the pressure, add fuel, turn up the boost, and tune the timing and there you go. and by the way i hit 24psi on the stock turbo, but i agree i starts to heat soak above 16 psi.(its ball bearing and small so its good for fast spool up and 12-16psi)

hold up your indez finger.....thats how big our rods are. 24psi?? I feel sorry for your car.

I turned my rod into power in cyclinder number 4, put five holes in the motor, and bent the other three rods into a half moon shape. My motor blew at 8 psi leaving a light to go get something to eat. The rods suck!!!!! This is the worst Mazda I have ever owned. My 89MX-6 turbo is ten times the car. Mazda cheaped out to bring down the price. It is going to cost in excess of 5000 to make it right.

the fs-de rods are good to about 250whp tuned very good.
the block,pistons,ect.. are good to about 20+ psi tuned

the major weekness in the msp motor or fs-de is the rods or rod bolts. if you want to run high boost replace them and you can make some really good power #'s.

if you really want to find out more info on the fs-de talk to juan @ hiboost he has over 15+ years tuning the fs-de.

His motor didn't do s***, neither did the internals, it was the rings. Thats the worste that happened on his car. I ran 14psi for a good 2 months. Desided to wait a little while and get engine management etc before running like that all the time. The car can do it if you're not doing crazy stuff. There are quite a few people running alot higher than stock boost. Most don't even talk about it like myself. I never said too much about it when i was. Only thru PMs to a couple people. With proper mods you can boost what ever your goals are. Regardless whether its spending 10,000 on the mods or not its always possible. You have to pay to play.

The answer to your question is timing...it is too far advanced to crank up the boost, along with the fact that it is tuned so poorly from the factory.

and as far as discreetspeed, he pushed the limits of the car for a year racing on a regular basis at 15psi and his motor is gone now...he is rebuilding it as we speak

if you tune the car it would probably be alot better at taking higher boost, but the fact is that mazda did use the same internals that you find on a stock protege and they will not hold up to contant punishment forever....

To the original poster, Mazda did not create a special engine package for our car. It was merely a factory bolt-on that is far behind HiBoost's kit which gives over 200whp. The transmission isn't much different from any other non-turbo Protege. VW, Dodge, Mitsu, Subaru, and other companies with turbo cars build an application specific engines. The engine was designed a long time ago and I doubt a turbo was even in mind. With the MPI or Unichip, you can easily obtain around 250whp without raising the boost about 15psi. I will say that with my stock IC, heat soak takes a huge hit and I'm only running at 13psi max. I could only think how useless 20psi would be unless I had a FMIC and better injectors.

last time i checked, the rings are part of the "motor" and "internals"...(scratch)
