My girl's 2004 Mazda 3s 2.3L auto....So i started the engine, approx 55 degrees outside, and this whining noise came about all of the sudden...seems to only happen in Park and Neutral, goes away in reverse or drive. Sounds like a pump problem to me....has this happened to anybody or caused any catastophic damage to trans???

I'm sure the epicyclic gears in the auto make a noise in P and N due no load is applied thru the trans from the engine to the differential and driveshafts. It's not uncommon especially in colder weather. The old Powerglide 2 spd used in GM cars were quite loud humming away in P/N :-) Once you select Drive or reverse,..or any lower gear, the gears "load-up" effectively stopping any hum from otherwise free-wheeling gears.

Thanks for the response man, i'd like to know if Mazda 3 owners who may have experienced this?
