A question for XM radio users

I am thinking about getting XM radio, but I want to see how the unit looks in the Proteges. Can someone post a picture of how they have the radio unit setup / mounted?

I have the stock 6-disc cd player, is there anything I need to know before I went to XM?

Thanks.

Are you adding the seperate controler or are you replaceing the radio to be an XM capatible one?

Who makes that one?
I am not up to date on the Satelite radio makers these days.
I was hoping to find some pics to suggest mounting locations.

seriously, I think XM radio stuff looks really nice,
but I'm not spending 5~$10/month.. Yup i'm really cheap
If I save $10 for year, I could get another ground wires from 1st MP3 in NH :D

XM Radio is worth every penny. 100 channels of pure listening bliss. I have had the service since March and I am mad at myself that I didnt get it sooner. I looked at the FM modulated units (Delphi) and decided to go with the XM ready Pioneer head unit instead. I plan to add an amplifier and subs so I wanted to ability to do so. In the pic below I mounted the head unit on the bottom so in the future I can add a TV monitor in the pocket above. The tuner module is under the passenger seat. If you are not planning on adding anything to your stereo then go with the FM modulated unit, if you dont mind mounting it to the dashboard..

XM Radio... You won't be disapointed..

I was looking at the XM Commander or SkyFi units. The commander is the most likely since it is cheaper.

To be honest the quality off of the skyfi is terrible. I can't expect much more from the commander, although I did not think it was released yet.
I would use the Pioneer or Alpine RF system as if you upgrade to either of those types of radios in the future you can ditch the FM peice and have a direct tuner.

SilvrProtege5NJ, that Pioneer unit looks cool.

I was hoping not to replace the stock head unit. I like the 6-disc changer :).

So I would have to go with one of the units that is mounted to the dash. If someone here has a picture of one of those mounted in thier P5, I'd like to see how it looks. If its going to look funky I don't want it.

Bijou-MP5, I totally understand. I'm super-cheap, which is good since I have no money ;) I may not go with anything, but I think I should check out my options.

The radio stations here suck. Totally dominated by country music, and the only rock station we got, was replaced by Top40. Grrrr.

That was my thinking when I got my Sirius unit. I got an FM modulator unit so I could keep my 6-CD stock radio. Well, after just two weeks with Sirius, there's no need for a 6 CD anymore. Everything I want is right there (and with no commercials). I'm now looking into getting a full Sirius ready radio to replace the Modulator console. :)

Well I don't have a pic, and I'm not even sure what unit I have. It was the cheap one and I think it is sony. I love XM I think I will upgrade to a better unit in the future, I want one that will show the name of songs being played and stuff. But I love the service, its great.

But to answer your mounting question, I mounted mine in that little cubby hole infront of the cup holders. It fits nice and leaves enough room so that If I wanted to take it out and bring it inside it's not a pain in my ass.

Here is a link to a picture of my unit. But you should not have to pay anywhere near what this site is asking for it. I got all the hardware with install for $75 at ABC wharhouse.

a while back I purchased the Alpine XM FM Modulated system from Crutchfield. It came complete with modulator, XM Receiver, cables, and HU controller. Whats cool is that the controller (which is the only thing you see) isn't an eyesore. Here is a pic:

The great thing is that the controller itself has a remote, so you don't even need to "mount" or display it, as long as the remote can get signal to it. What else is cool is that I have an Alpine 12 disc changer which can be passed through the alpine Receiver
(pic here:)

and then controlled by the controller. Actually ANYTHING AiNet compatible can be controlled by the controller. Anyway, it was quite cheap when they were on sale. I bought it a crutchfield for $150-175 and included the receiver, controller, FM modulator, and all. Just needed to buy an antenna. havent hooked it up yet in the P5 yet except for the antenna, cables and FM mod....but havent run it to the stock HU b/c i am having warranty repairs on the stock 6-disc changer. Once system is up and running, I'll have 18 discs of music, local stations, and 100+ XM stations to rock to! (rockon)

forgot to mention the unit also allows for an Aux input as well (eg video audio, mp3 player, etc...)

Also, if you decide to install an aftermarket Alpine XM ready unit, you just take the XM modulator and controller out of the line and just hook the AiNet cable to the HU and ur good to go!

All this talk of XM makes me wish i could hook it up now!!!

Here are a couple pics of my setup.

I have the Delphi Skyfi running through an fm modulator into my kenwood kvt910dvd and i also have a kenwood ktcsr901 sirius tuner going directly into my deck. Personally I like Sirius more, but my wife likes XM. We got the delphi so we could take it in the house to listen to as well.

PICS OF DELPHI

I work at Circuit City and we sell more Delphi, Kenwood, and Audiovox Plug n' play units than anything else do to portability.

I got the Delphi unit, so that I could take it into the house, or wherever (like the hotel I am in right now, with the home kit) and I got a deck that has an aux input on the front. However, I am going to buy an adapter to allow the aux input on the back of the unit. I didn't want to do the FM modulator, because that reduces the near digital quality sound to the quality of the FM transmission.

Circuit City fashioned (and painted) a bracket that would allow it to mount between the stereo and the glove box. I will take pics and upload them today.
