A little help now..

I was hoping that you all could help me make a decision. I am deciding wether to buy a msp or a wrx. It seems to me that you guys are having ALOT of problems with this car. I am in love with the msp and its price fits me perfectly, but Im not quite sure about its reliability and how much I will be spending on repairs alone. From the forum it looks like I would spend more time repairing it than modding it. The wrx is alittle pricey for what I am looking for, but would love to have it.
So can anyone help me with my decision? It seems as if you all love your msp's even after all of the problems, is it worth it? S (braindead hould I just shell out the $$ to go with the wrx...?
Thanks for the help.
The short bus..

I'd say the Subie will be more reliable in the long run.....but if you can get the Mazda for 16500 or less, then the Mazda might be a better deal. Really it depends how much money you have and what you want to do with that money.

Why do you say the msp is unreliable? I havent had one problem with it so far. The only reason people are spending so much to fix them is because they turn up the boost to much or dont know how to drive. If you like the msp over the WRX I would get the speed. The speed will out handle the wrx and looks alot nicer imo. But if you want power I would go with the wrx.

I would get the speed because the handling , stereo, wheels, and the interior is better than the wrx but if you want power get the wrx

I love my speed but there is only one smart decision to make here. ONE PHRASE

AWD

faster, cheaper modified, durability, and its a wrx

If you have the cash and don't mind being another WRX owner, go for it, it will be faster and more reliable. I have not done a damn thing besides the Forge BOV on my car and I have had many problems, the newest one being a lot of pinging on 93 octane, no mods, stock boost. Good luck.

Mike

Havent had any problems with, except for a few pet peeves but they are totally outweighed by the other goodies this car comes with. Its not like your buying a neon or an older generation eclipse, but mazda's are fairly reliable.

I love my car and wouldnt give it up for anything......not even a STi......... :)

I've had a huge amount of issues with my car but all in all, I'm loving this car more than any other car I've had or seen on the road, period. People think I'm playing when they talk about winning the lottery and getting a Ferrari and I say I'd keep my Mazda and just dump parts in to it.. But I would. The only thing right now that will seperate me from this car will be a very bad wreck.

I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post in this thread due to DSM2MSP's signature because I have a windshield banner for my car club... and I have "altezza's" (kinda, even though the lenses are completely red, but have 3 circles..) and I'm getting eyelids put on in about a week. But I'd still like to answer to this thread. I haven't had any problems with my MSP except for the crappy stock sub blowing.. and my rotors are warped (probably from me slamming on my brakes to avoid hitting animals or other random slamming of the brakes..*cough* pinning the odometer at 140+mph doing a 5th gear burnout on ice and having to stop the tires from spinning *cough*) Anyways, I'd go with the MSP just because you don't see as many.. and it's also the top model protege. I'd always advise someone to get the best model of any car.. like if someone wanted an eclipse, I'd tell them to get the gsx.. or for a jetta.. get the vr6.. etc. You get the point. A wrx will never be a STi, so don't buy it and be upset that it isn't. My friend regrets so bad buying an oz rally lancer and dumping 50 grand into it when he coulda bought a evo a year later and dumped 35 grand into it.

I would take the MSP -
#1 - its NOT a WRX -
#2 - Scoobie headgaskets are killer to repair (every scoobie my friends have owned has had them repeatedly go bad! - engine has to come out)
#3 MSP handles better
#4 Insurance is cheaper on an MSP
#5 MSP (by your post) is more affordable
#6 Just get the damn MSP - If your not looking for the image get the MSP - if your a poser get the WRX (NOT all WRX owners are posers - but a Lot are!) (glare)

WTF?? (boom01) so now he has a $65,000 EVO???

Couldn't have said it better myself. I've also said that about if I won the lottery that I wouldn't buy a ferrari and I'd keep my mazda.. but of course I'd still buy a couple other cars.. like a civic and make it rediculously fast, a lowrider truck, some kind of SUV, and maybe a couple other cars.. but I'd make sure my protege was the best :)

Offtopic: I raced a ford lightning from a roll tonight.. i was in 3rd gear at about 3k rpms when we started (dont remember how fast) but I actually kept up.. I was surprised! he pulled ahead though right before i had to slow down cuz there was a car up ahead.. but I was actually kinda proud of my stock MSP.

No.. It's pretty much a $50,000+ Oz Rally Lancer. :(
I meant waited a year to buy the evo (evo wasnt out at the time when he bought the other lancer) sorry for not making that clear

its all good I just couldnt see a normal person sinking 35K into an EVO -
It could happen - but not really.

I have a friend doing an EVO 4/5 conversion on a mirage- man is he in for it! (chair)

i had the option of buying a wrx cheaper than my msp. when it came down to it i liked the handleing much better. and you don't see them nearly as often. I think i made a good choice because i beat my friend who has the wrx in every autox i have entered in. (wrc)

I, for one have had no problems with my 'speed. It seems like those w/major problems are the same people all the time. And I've noticed more modded ones having trouble than those of us "stockers".

no i would buy the ferrari

anyways ive driven both. and it comes down to do you want to do a straight line or have a car that is FUN to drive. the wrx ive driven had a full turbo back, ecu upgrade, and 16psi. my god that thing was fast. we could redline and drop the clutch with no tire spin. but i still beat the hell out of it for fun factor. the owner of the wrx couldn't touch me in the turns.

another thing. not only would you have to spend the cash on the car itself but you would also have to upgrade the stereo instanly. the mazdaspeed has a pimpshit one stock!

i feel ya on that way dude..

a friend of mine used up almost $20k
just to get his HP up to 200ish @ wheels..

and yes.. he has an OZ rally Lancer.

and yet.. i look at my MSP.. thinkin.. if i blow $20k.. i'll be dancing w/ evo's and STI's. lol.. even just $3k.. and i'll out power my friends lancer.

and the MSP looks MUCH better. hehe

Hell yeah! Having a factory turbo makes those first few mods cheap and powerful ;)

And I was thinking...what the hell did he get...$20K for 200WHP? For $20K he should be a LOT higher than that, unless he's afraid of turbos or something.

Thanks Guys!

Thanks for all of the replys. I forgot to mention that the number one reason that I was looking at the wrx was because my girlfriend and I live in north western ohio, and the weather can get really bad up here, and awd would be great for her(this is car is for her, I already have an 2003 eclipse to toy with). (she wanted the rsx, msp or wrx)... I also heard that the msp sucks in winter, but im sure a set of tires clears that problem up easily. There are two new msp's left in the midwest(titanium silver), and currently Im trying to purchase one, but the dealership wants 21 for it, and im hearing 19-17 new from you all. Hopefully all will go well and we will be around here more often.
Thanks agian guys..
ShortBus.

The reliability on the speed has been a nightmare. Although I like the speed better than the wrx. More exclusive.
