A/C Went Out, greaattt...

The title pretty much sums it up. My Air Conditioning went on on my 11' Mazda2. I'm only 16,500 miles into the car and a few days ago I noticed the A/C wasn't getting that cold. As the days progressed, so did the failing A/C. I drove my car last night and now there's no cold air whatsoever.

Thank God it's Fall right now and the weather isn't that hot here in Florida. If it was Spring or Summer, I'd be screwed. I have an appointment this Saturday with the dealership. I guess we'll see what happens. Here's hoping for the best right?

Oddly enough though, my 96' Protege had an A/C issue, had to get a re-built compressor. My 05' Mazda3 ALSO had an A/C issue where it would go out and you'd have to turn the A/C off and the re-circulate button off, turn it back on and it was good to go. This would happen once a day, none sometimes and then 3-4 times in a day. I finally get a new Mazda and bam, more A/C issues. One has to laugh at some point.

Gee, last A/C issue I had was a 78 Monte Carlo back around 1985 but that was the LEAST of it's issues and keeping a 99 cent can of R12 connected under the hood would quickly fix the issue. I finally sold my spare cans of R12 several years ago. 2002 Miata, 2009 M3 and 2011 M2 w/o issues in the immediate family.

I'd also be like Mazdamatic since I'm only a few hundred miles north of him.

Let us know what they find. I assume a bad fitting but who knows!

I certainly will. Oh and to top it all off, I ended up hitting a HUGE pothole last night due to the electric company here being careless and now have a bubble in my tire (God only knows what other damager it caused). I called the city and an adjuster should be calling me at some point. Here's hoping the city foots the bill, or at least some of it. Ugh, this week is NOT going well for me.

>.< i'm kinda glad i got the extended warranty then...for $2k i got the 10 year 100,000 mile warranty that covers everything on the car including labor for $100 deductable...i have a copy and it was explained to me as, if my clutch goes out, they'll cover all the labor plus the cost of the clutch disc and $100, or if my water pump goes out, they'll replace everything with labor for $100. I also opted for the road hazard warranty >.< . If i bend a rim they'll replace it for free, if i get a nail they'll patch it for free, if my tire pops they'll replace it for free >.< I'll make sure to keep an eye out on my A/C.

I just got to the dealership and right off the bat, the service advisor said it sounds like the A/C compressor isn't kicking on...odd. I'll post more once the techs look at it.

It may simply be low Freon. Which may become more common with the newer gas being used.

Check the fuse by any chance?

***UPDATE*** Well, after leaving my car at the dealership, they gave me another 2011 Mazda2 on loan while they researched the issue. After some research, I got a call back just now and the service advisor tells me that my "high-line" was low and my "low-line" was high. He also stated they've had to order a new A/C compressor and blower. It will be in tomorrow and they'll call me back once it's installed and the diagnostics have been run.

Allow me to note that I've always loved Duval Mazda's service team ever since the day I brought my 05' Mazda3 in there for service years ago and they still continue to come through for me. I'd still like to bring up a very valid concern though. A brand new car needs a new A/C compressor and blower after only 16,500 miles. Does that sit well with any of you out there? I won't go too far with this but I'd like to at least suggest to all who are in the market for a new Mazda2, definitely consider purchasing the extended warranty as you may very well need it. I've never purchased one myself but if it's offered to me when I get close to 36,000 miles, I'll probably buy it.

Oh, concerning my complaint filed with the city, the claims adjuster called me back and is still investigating the issue. Here's hoping for the best.

I've owned about a dozen Japanese cars and only had one thing done under the warranty. All they actually had to do was an adjustment, but they replaced perfectly good parts. $$$$$$$$$$$ for them.

I totally agree with you about extended warranties. I dunno, after having 3 Mazda's all the have A/C issues though, I definitely wouldn't wanna come out of pocket for it, lol.

I'd call it a fluke. I use to sell top of the line home A/C units and once in a blue moon a unit would fail early. I'm almost 50 years old and none of the extended warranties would have every paid for themselves. The 90 Dodge minivan would have been the exception but so many things went wrong on that jewel we traded it at 59k miles while still under it's 60k powertrain warranty. Now if a dealer would give me a decent price on an extended warranty from 100k-200k miles then I'd take that! I recall many cars that had component failures by 50k miles back in the 70's and 80's but the quality has been forced to improve (domestic and foreign).

Now if you owned the M2 distant cousin (Fiesta) with the auto-tranny...I'd highly recommend the warranty. Way too many trannies being replaced under 10k miles to make one wonder about their longevity. Not a high percentage but if you read the Ford boards or check out the NTSA compaint site, you wouldn't want to be in their situation. The primary reason I went with the M2.

Dsgrey, I completely agree with you. I've worked in Collateral Loans for 5 years now and definitely know that extended warranties aren't worth their weight in gold, however; with only a 36k warranty and something like this happening so early on, it does tend to make one rethink if you will, the value of an extended warranty.

Replica, "sometimes" stuff DOES happen, I agree. When it's your third Mazda and they've all had the same kind of issue though, it's time to stop justifying it as "stuff happens", at least in my mind it is.

You're jinxed? No issues with my 02 Miata, 09 M3 or 11 M2. Speaking statistically, I'm more than happy you get the anomalies. (boom06)

I understand your line of thinking. I had such a bad experience with one brand twenty years ago that I'll never buy another. Ironically I don't think they've changed and are now owned by an even worse brand that left the US market 30 years ago due to quality issues.

I also seem to be an expert on replacing common failure items on the 1st generation Focus with two in the family. I replaced the 3rd power window actuator on a 2000 model 2 weeks ago. Only one OEM actuator left to go! I've already replaced the plastic thermo housing that cracks around 80k miles, the ignition lock (pain!) and blinker stalk that fails around the same time. A/C systems are a little more intense for my preference.
