7000 miles and I'm already car shopping.

If you want to save money, get high mileage...

Get a geo metro like my wife's commute car ...

50 MPG! Hardly any maintenance in 300,000 miles...

Downside to a Geo Metro is it is small, no luggage capacity and steers, accellerates and turns like an economy car... Nothing like the CX7...

But if your most important factor is mileage... Get a Geo,,, $9,000 nicely equipped...

If you are after a nicer driving roomier car you mileage will go down from there. My wifes other car, a NewBeetle non-turbo only gets 27 mpg! on a 2 liter non turbo car that weighs less...

Yours is not the worst, when I was moving from Tennessee to Pennsylvania a couple of weeks ago towing my motorcycle in a heavy U-Haul trailer, the best I got going thru the West Virginia hills was 145 miles per tank which equates to about 10 mpg, now that's bad. Now I must admit that I did not have any problems towing the trailer thru the hills, it kept its speed at 70 all thru the hills so it has great power but it suck allot of gas. Once the trailer was removed, I do about 250 per tank and that's stopping for gas a quarter of a tank. You are correct about it should be better and as stated in previous replies, I would take it into the dealership and yell FIRE. Another thing that I've noticed which I hate, the transmission sure loves to jump btwn 4 thru 6 all the times, it's like the 6th gear is too much of an over drive so it's always going back down to either 4th or 5th. I'll get that check when I bring it into the dealer.

my ms3 consitently gets 26-28 mpg and i beat on it regulary...i now its not a cx-7 but it may be an option if you decide to trade....look on the bright side....your not getting 8-10mpg like i am in my nissan titan...it sure is fun though...lol

I fill up around 270-280 miles with 1/4 of a tank left... Using around 11-12 gallons to fill it up. So 22 to 24 mph is my norm on my CX7.

Do you have a heavy foot when you take off form stops?

If you have a heavy foot, the heavy vehicle and turbo motor will reduce your mileage to lower.

Now as stated by others, if you have have your car loaded down to the gills or tow a heavy trailer you cannot expect 30 mpg...

It is not miles per tank, but miles per gallon. This car only has an 18 gallon tank so you cannot expect 500 miles on a tank. I do this in my big truck but then it is $80- $90 to fill up the 34 gallon tank when it reaches empty... 18 mph at best in that big beasty..

I have noted that mine will pop down into 5th on steeper hills on the freeway. The way I understand it, both 5th and 6th are overdrives and it would make since to down shift and use less throttle than to keep it in 6th and be forced to use more gas pedal to maintain your speed. After all, this is a little 4 not a 5.7 liter V8 like my truck has. Closer gear spacing is one advantage of more gears in a transmission. Though the Torque converter in automatics will also help do this but with less efficiency.

If you like to stomp on the gas and expect great mileage many performance cars are not going to give you the mileage you want. If you wnat to be able to flog a car and get 50 mpg get a Geo Metro... Drive one slow, or fast and it will still get 50 mpg...

Simple solution.

Trade car in for Viper... after all its the "same cost".

7000 miles later you are massively in debt.

Start over.

You drop $25,000 on a new car, spend HUNDREDS on insurance, and are pissed when you spend $3 more at the gas station? Please.

an update of sorts...

I took my cx-7 in for a 7500 mile maintenance at my local dealer. I told them about my mileage and they blew me off. I told them that the alignment was off and they blew me off as well until they realized I was actually correct. I love it how dealership service people think that everyone who brings in their car is a complete moron. I, myself, am not a moron. Infact, It felt really weird when I went to the dealer to get my first oil change on my cx-7. It was also my first oil change not done by myself on one of my cars.

To sum up my trip, I still think there is a problem with 5th and 6th gear that needs to be addressed by mazda. My tranny doesn't want to stay in 6th gear and constantly downshifts to 5th if I use D mode and not M. There is a reason why I got an automatic, I'm tired of driving manuals.

The alignment fix has worked out decently to help mpg as well as me using M mode more often so that I can take advantage of 6th gear. I am getting about 17mpg now which is promising to me. I don't want anyone here to think I am a whining b**** that thought I was getting a toyota prius when I bought this car but, is 20mpg asking too much?

In Canada there is now a TSB with PCM and TCM reprogram. I had it done couple of weeks ago and the CX-7 drives noticably better. It also eliminated the 5th-6th gear problem. The shifting seems better and the shift points are improved as well.
