6x9 speakers in back?

Yes, pull off the door panel, cut bigger holes in the door skins, and I'm pretty sure that a 6x9 will fit in there.

Question: Why would you want to do this?

you lose sound quality with oval speakers, go with components, and you will be very happy that you did. 6x9's are not really good for anything.

Not completely true. 6x9 speakers produce a LOT of mid-bass... far more then a 6-1/2" round speaker could ever dream of. I have seen very good implementations of 6x9 speakers in the front doors, and also as dedicated mid-bass speakers in the rear shelf or rear doors where space for a sub was an issue.

You ever seen oval speakers anywhere but in a car? There's a reason for that. They suck. All high quality speakers are round, in a car or otherwise.

Again, not completely true. There are some manufactures out there making good 6x9 speakers.. such as Image Dynamics. The main reason most of the good speakers you see out there are round, is because they are from the home audio realm. OEM manufactures have a speaker design that works for home use; then they put some water-resistant features on them, and sell them to Alpine, Sony, Rockford, and every other car audio re-seller out there. Granted there are some car-audio manufactures that don't use modified home audio designs.. but most of them do. As to why they are round for home use? well, it's the easiest design to implement (easiest to manufacture) and home audio has the benefit of space...

Just for the record though, I feel that putting 6x9's in the rear doors, in this application, would be a BAD idea...

Not true. HSU research used ovals (4 x 6) in the old Ventriloquist line and Definitive Technology uses ovals (active and passive drivers) in some of its HT speakers that are not cheap.

I love 6x9's they get great punchy bass and dont need much room. but I agree with the man above, I would not cut new holes in my door....Components FTW!
