Alright my friend of mine has a '99 maunel 626 with a little over 100k miles on it (alot for a 99) right...and there is this funny noise that the car makes when it is in neutral, and only in neutral. its like a clicking noise, when ever his car is going at a slow speed the clicking is slow, but when it is going fast the clicking is fast. I dont know what it can be, i know its not something to do with the engine cause it wouldve probably made the same noise if the car was in gear, i was thinking somethign with the flywheel and transmission..i have no idea. Dont know if he needs to worry about it or not...But any help is appreciated. Thanks

they are the lifters for the valves. Mazda all have the same problem with the hla's making noise. This may or may not be the problem, I have no idea. Someone would have to take a look at the car and find out where the noise is coming from.

The '99 626 doesn't have HLAs. It has mechanical lifters, but the noise still might be the lifters.

About the clicking, does it depend on CAR speed (MPH) or ENGINE speed (RPM)? If it's car speed, it has nothing to do with the lifters.

Where does the clicking seem to come from?

i had the same problem on my manual mazda6 S, It would just click like crazy and i found out it was the moter mounts had cracked, and i had to get 3 of them replaced. Even though my car was pretty new, it just happend from hard driving, and the mazda6 and 626 probley have the same weak mounts, so check into that, sounds like exactly what happened to me!!

you can hear it from inside the car, sounds like it is under the car. The sound "the clicking" only comes up when the car is in neutral, but not when the car is in gear. And if the car is going slow, clicks are slow, when the car is going at a faster speed the clicks are faster. im guessing something could be loose. but its under the car, where the sounds is coming from

i am telling you it's the mounts, i would be drving slow then hear it and as i would drive faster it would click even louder, its metal hitting metal, and when you drive faster the engine vibrates more
