5W-30 and 95* Temps...?

Hey all,

I'm in Florida and the average temp out here lately has been 95* or higher...
I have noticed lately (in the past 2 weeks) that my oil is not at the full level...some of it burnt off or simply disappeared...:wtf:

My oil level used to remain at max till the following oil change...

I'm wondering if the temperature had anything to do with it? I buy my oil at Titan Motorsports (Red Line) and they were questioning my selection of the 5W-30 for the summer. They said everyone runs 10W-30 or 10W-40 during the summer...

Any thoughts? Anyone experiencing this...?
Just in case, I'm not smoking and I don't have oil in my intake tract.

I would run the 10W30 and do all year round. We do not have lasting cold temps in Central FL to worry about cold weather viscosity issues.

That is strange about your oil level going down on a fairly new engine over a 2week period. How much do you think your losing?
 
Nobody should ever use 5W, way too thin under any conditions!!! 10W as a minimum.

I have no clue, what I had to add to get it back up to max was about an 1/8 or so of a quart.
 
Maybe you did not use the exact amount at your last change, but keep an eye on it for sure. 4-ozs is not as bad as 1/2 or whole quart in between changes. Either of those amounts would mean serious issues.

I believe that Mazda does recommend 5W, but I just think that is too thin for boost and more of an EPA-MPG testing deal. Could be wrong but I still wouldn't use it.

I always dump the full 6 quarts into it...
I'm still burning/seeing my oil disappear ever so slightly day after day... The temps have been in the high 95*-98* though.
 
You do realize, in general, a 5w30 and a 10w30 are the exact same at operating temps. Also, simply laying out a blanket statement such as 5w30 sucks for hot weather/turbo applications isn't always 100% correct.

There are some very good 0w30 and 5w30 motor oils.

Although I will agree 100% that Mazda speced 5w30 for fuel economy. If they thought they could have gotten away with 5w20 in a turbo motor they would have speced that.

I wouldn't waste my time with 10w30 though, if you are going to go up a grade just shoot for synthetic 0w40, 10w40 or 5w40. I believe most of the Subie turbo & VW turbo owners run this grade if they "upgrade" for performance reasons.

I live in Jax fl and saw 100 the other day and my oil level is still at specs. what brand of oil do you use?
 
5w-30 and 10w-30 have the same viscosity at operating temperature, as stated above. My 300C uses 5w-20 so the MDS will work. My Ram gets 5w-30 and the Speed gets 5w-30. None of them lose/burn any oil (the Ram has 96K miles).

I believe the book shows 10w-30 for sustained temps above 100. The morning I walk outside here in N. Florida and it's already 100 is when I'll believe in global warming. (yes) It's rarely that hot here and then only for a few days. I'll stick with what the manual says.
