Our cars must have real low gearing for when I am going 85mph my car sits a 4100rpm's. I think this is too high of an RPM for our car espcially on a long trip when your state has a 75mph speed limit. Any one else have that prob?

yea, its sort of anoying when driving long distance its like ur lookin for a 6th gear. there was a disscusion about this a while ago. i like it when im passing cars on the highway cause u dont need to down shift. but when crusin its to high.

Damn, you guys must have the same transmission as the Probe GT then because that is how my GT (V6) is... The 4 cylinder Probe has slightly higher gearing, which makes it much more forgiving while cruising.

FYI... The Probe GT has a final drive of 4.105, while the Probe with the I4 has a final drive of 3.850

I can get all gearing specs if yo'd like, but I don't know them by heart... Lemme know what else you guys want for info..

Jon, My 94 Probe that I traded on the MP3 had Mazda drive/tranny. All Probes from what I have been told are Mazda engines/trannies.
Ahh I miss my probe --- Dropped 3 inches on 16's. Fire engine red with a blue pearl overlay, Fully shaved ahh it was my baby. But the tranny went to s*** even after I had it replaced so I had to dump it. Only 94000 miles.

I don't really have a problem with my MP3, I think the gearing is fine. If the RPM's are too low at a high speed you'll be down shifting all the time to make passes. I think the gearing is fine, I can make a nice smooth pass without having to rev to the sky like I did with my Civics. Of course everyone sees things different. I'm satisfied with mine.......for now hehe :D

This is kind of strange for your rpm to be so high, when I am going 85mph the RPM on the tach says 3600. Don't know why it is so high  on yours. Could be that my RPM is set low, but so far no problems with it.

Dont get me wrong I dont mind the high RPM's for passing and quick get up, but was wondering if my car was geared different from others. As I see from Apexi, Deep, and Ocean is that they may be geared different than myself, Rae, and Paul. Interesting!!!!

Well, like I said, the Probe SE (4 cyl) is the same engine you guys have, but the trans should put you at around 3600 at 85 in 5th. That sounds right for the 4 cylinder probe...

For the V6 probe, upwards of 4200 is normal for that speed... lower gearing.

I wish I could have the Probe I4 engine (MP3 engine) and the Probe V6 transmission. Its a perfect setup...

For the guy that misses his Probe, yes, all Probes are Mazda MX6s with different styling. If your trans went out that quickly, you probably had an ATX right?? The ATX in Probe SUCKS...

Jon, Yea it was the ATX. Those damn tranny's are a f*#@ing nightmare. When I get a USB cable for my scanner I will post a pic of the Probe in my profile along with my MP3. I was stupid to trade that car, ( spent 1 month alone shaving the handles, antenna, water spickets, emblems, etc and smoothing it to perfection. )I should have just put a conversion 6cyl in the car and blow every one away.. hehe! C-Ya, Ryan :D

And what about the compatibility of the 5th gears, everything I have read says good to go. I am resurecting all old threads to do with this matter, (glare)

Why post?
Anyway the last time I drove on the highway for more than an hour the sound of my header/high flow/Tanabe exhaust at 3600RPM starts to wear at my brain. It means many times when I am looking forward to taking the P5 on a road trip the GF wants to take our other un-modified vehicle(pissed)

So if I can lower the RPM's by 400 on the highway we will all be happy campers(first)

I have no idea what some of you guys are complaining about.

I take my MP3 on lots of road trips. Cruising at 80-85 MPH I sit right between 3500-4000 RPM. With that I get about 30-32 MPG.

In my Sentra SE-R 80MPH is 4000 rpm spot on and I get about 30 MPG.

You guys whining about the "high" rpms on the highway are funny.

So again why post?

I don't give a s*** about fuel economy, I spent over $10k on mods on my car do you think my issue is with 28 or 32 MPG? Get serious, I clearly stated why I want to do this mod, I want a true OD so the car is more enjoyable at cruising speed on road trips, stricktly a sound issue.

So if anyone has helpful comments I would truely appreciate them and I will share my findings of course.

I've read on here somewhere that there is a fifth gear replacement as well as a final drive? Or is there only the final drive. I too would like to lower the cruising RPM's.

Found the link. I'm not sure how to link the post to here, but I'll try.

Thanks, I have been active on that one. What I am trying to dicover is why that kit is $250US when the 626 5th is under $100 Canadian. I realize there are gaskets etc. but it seems like a lot.

Yeah, the buzz/hum, whatever you wanna call it is much worse in the P5 because of the hatch. Have you tried some dynamat or other brand on insulation on the floor? You can also use a spray on underbody coat that helps protect from elements, but also has a small bit on sound suppression.

Yup, I do have a fair bit of sound damping material in the spare tire well and the jack well and a bit in the hatch itself. I can deal with the sound more than my girlfriend. (no I don't mean I can't deal with my GF, I mean she doesn't like the noise on longer trips)
