Is this a common problem? I just got a 2006 Mazda 3 hatchback and wanna put som HIDs in. Wondering if anyone has ever had problems the 55w kits melting their housings. Should I jut stick with the 35w or are the 55w ok?

Thanks

Most wiring is not meant for 55w HID's...Also, as far as them melting the housing...I can't say that they will, but I would not put it past. If the wiring is not meant to handle that wattage then the housings probably aren't as well. I would stick with 35w just to be safe and not have to go the extra mile for capacitors etc.

For a 55w kit, i would recommend running a wiring harness. This basically plugs into the headlight socket but only uses it for the signal and hooks up to the battery for power. I have ran the same 55w kit on my 04 mz3 and my 2012 ms3 and it hasn't caused any issues. The 55w kit may melt wires or not start correctly consistantly without the harness as the kits take alot of power to start but then the power consumption actually goes down to safe levels. I would run a 55w HID kit before i ever ran those 100w regular bulbs. Those will mess your car up. They either melt wires, melt housings, or just straightup shatter.

Sounds like the 35W is the way to go for me. As long as the lights are brighter than crappy halogen and aren't yellowish, I will be happy. And with the cost of 35w kits, I wouldn't be out a ton if I want to upgrade in the future anyway.

Yeah you can get a kit from ddm tuning for pretty cheap.

Hey this is my first comment to the forum.

I have a 3s with the ddm tuning 55w hids. There is nothing wrong with the 55w hids. I've been runing them for 8 months now with no wiring issues or melting. The lights are great. They are simple. They input 12vdc to a ballast and output 85vdc to the bulb.

I also have the 55W kit in my Mazda 3i. I used to run a wiring harness but I felt like it made the alternator run harder and took away performance. Now I just run the kit off of the regular power wires and have no problems. As far as melting the housing, I havent had any problems as the cars that come with the factory HIDs use the same housing just add a assembly for leveling out the HIDs. No melting problems here. Hope this helps!

^^^^^Uh no. The projector is different between the halogen and xenon assemblies. Aftermarket 55w generate a lot of heat, a lot more than halogens. You can burn the projector bowls with them. I've seen 55w kits burn xenon projector bowls and they are designed with higher heat tolerances than halogen bowls.

It's actually really easy to make the first gen halogens perform pretty well. Just need a clear lens from TRS, painting the cutoff shield black, and a quality 35w HID kit. The second gen Koito projectors aren't as good

I have a 08 MZ3 and have had the same pair of HID's 55w with plug and play ballast for years. No issues and I get complements all the time. With the bulbs I purchased, I did have to purchase a spacer that went on the back of the bulbs to prevent the bulb from being loose.

The 08's used 3" Stanley projectors which are pretty decent projectors. 55w in any halogen projector is still terrible and will be outperformed by a 35w xenon projector

I ran 55w hid on mostly every single car I had. from a ae86 to my fianc Celica with no issues.
I recently bought a hid kit for my mazda3
