40k Miles Service?

Just wondering what type of service you guys would do (in the service manual or not) if you were about to hit 40k miles? Im only 1.5k away...(boom01)

this is what i would do...
1. check fluids for level and consistancy
2. jack up car and look at exhaust, suspension, fluid lines like brakes and fuel
3. take of wheels and inspect brake pads and rotors
4. look all over for any kind of rust or abnormal wear and tear
5. lubricate all hinges and locking mechanisms (something vastly overlooked)

shame if you were to find anything now since you're past your manufacturer warranty, but it's good to catch things before they get worse.

some other things you can keep in mind but are probably not necessary at this point is changing spark plugs (usually 50-60k miles), fuel filter (this would be a big job because you have to take apart the fuel tank).

most things you shouldn't have to outright replace at certain mileages, all you have to do is inspect them and change as needed. for instance coolant. this coolant is supposed to last 100k miles, but it's still important to look at it before then.

timing chains last longer than timing belts, but still need to be changed eventually....and by that i mean well over 100k usually. they can get stretched over time, and the teeth on the timing gears can be worn down as well

Im adding this to my list :) What about on the suspension side, anything in special I should lube?

suspension side depends on driveability issues, but with the car jacked up and the wheels still on you can check the wheel bearing by grabbing the tire at 12 and 6 o'clock and wiggling (there should be no "notchy" sort of play), and checking the steering play by wiggling the tire at 9 and 3 o'clock.

Serpentine belt or Accessory belt

can't believe i forgot about the serpentine belt. grab the belt somewhere directly in the middle of 2 spindles and try to twist the belt. it shouldn't go more than a 90 degree turn, or else it's stretched and should be replaced. also, if you can see any cracking on the belt (normally on the inside) you should replace it. i think the general rule is replace belt if there are more than 5 cracks/inch of belt

Good Info thanks man! Feel free to add more to the list as it comes to mind...I go the extra mile for my baby

i know how you feel. i recently made a personal visit to my local dealer and asked the lead tech there if they did any other intervals besides what was in the owners manual. he didn't give me too much info besides "just check on things every so often and replace/repair as needed," which is pretty obvious but i wanted to make sure

while i was there i also asked about services that have been done that were premature to the owners manual like brake pads and such. he let me know that there haven't been any early replacements or repairs done so the equipment is lasting as long as can be expected

just thought of something else, check your battery terminals. this can easily go unchecked due to the plastic cover that goes over it. if there's any corrosion you can disconnect, clean, and reattach the cables with some of that red spray-on terminal cleaner stuff.

Yeah when I was installing my mods my terminals were completely corroded, so I took one of those thingys with the metal hairs and took all that crap off, it looks like new now! It just makes me more skeptical of the previous owner's ability to take care of the car. (screwy)

Also Im reading that according to schedule 2 which is assuming the harshest conditions spark plugs should be changed every 60k km or more or less 40k miles..I guess I should pick up 4 and change that?

well there you go, i wasn't in front of an owners manual so i couldn't say for sure what the distance was. but i thught i remember the tech saying since they're iridium they last a little longer than conventional.

don't try to gap them because that could damage the tips (iridiums are not supposed to be gapped), also don't forget a little bit of anti-seize. if you have a torque wrench handy it's 8-10ft/lbs

The fuel filter is located in the gas tank?

Or are you talking about the sock that filters at the tank pump inlet?

Man, I hpoe like hell the fuel filter is on the underside of the car somewhere!

Don't feel like tearing the gas tank out of the car for a "service interval"......
