3rd gear is grin-diiing!

Well its a lot worse now. I can't even use 3rd gear. I had to call into work last night because I wasn's sure if my car would make it to Allen. It makes a constant grind in every gear now, and 3rd gear is unusable. I need to get this fixed fast! If anyone knows of any links to any MSP transaxles, or any 2001+ 3rd Gen Protege G15M-R transmissions, please let me know!

Linux did you want this? i still have to get the car shipped to me, problem is i have a two week annual training coming up for the natty guard..ill be gone until the 22nd, so it wont be avail until after then
I'd need it sooner than that....Like next week. (sad2)

Thanks guys! Keep em' comming. I just called Corksport.com about getting a new ACT Clutch Disc with Throw-out and Piolot bearings. I've had the ACT clutch on since Feb. 2002! (eek2) They say $140 shipped to me. Now to source a transmission. Costs less to swap a transaxle than to re-build. It's all in the labor costs. ;)

Alright, get this...I just called http://www.mazdarecycling.com and asked about whether or not they had any Manual Transaxles for a 01+ Protege 5. I told him that I have the MP3. He told me that those will not work. :wtf: I think he has my car confused with the Mazdaspeed or some s***, because the way I understood it, the manual transmissions from the P5's, and the 01+ Sedans ARE THE SAME! The best part is when he ******* hung up on me. (pissed)

I dont see why they wont fit... I have heard that our trannys are different from other proteges though.. Mine says G5 all over it, it doesnt say G15 anywhere on it(shrug) this explaina why so many mp3 owners have had tranny issues (including me)

Damn, I got quoted $975 for a transmission with 2,000 miles on it yesterday.
I got quoted $1,100 for a rebuild (just for labor).

This is ******* discouraging. :(

according to mazda, the transmissions from the 2.0 626, any protege variant (msp, p5, mp3, es) with the 2.0 will fit

What I want to know is what the differences in the trannies are.
the 626 supposedly has stronger synchros that eliminate the harsh 2nd gear shift

(hmm) I already have the 626 motor in my car, haveing the tranny would make it more complete...Hey, where are you getting your info?

Good shops can do some major rebuilds on them with the box still installed...There may be some differences like mentioned between the different protege models (I am not sure abou the G15 to G5 s***), but all the G series cases have that acces cap on the end opposite the engine...which allows skilled dudes to mess with the gearset with the box still mounted in the car...I had an entire new (well new to me) gear set mounted into a 93 probe GT (has a g series gearbox) for 650 including labor...it did what you mentioned too...grinded in every gear (started only in 5th, but 5th shattered and ruined everything else), 5th was gone...and popped out of every gear on lift throttle except reverse...problem was cured after the used gear set (which was sourced for $250 I think, but was on a 50,000 mile Mx-6)...I don't know man...this may not help you at all, but talk to different shops that have exprience with these boxes...Some mechs don't even know about the end cap...

Also something that should not be overlooked could be simply a clutch problem...with some heavier cluthes, a common problem can be related to disengagement...In which everytime you shift it grinds because the clutch is not disengaging properly due to a number of reasons...but it does not mean anything is wrong with the actual transaxle (not initially anyway)...How long have you had the problem? and does it only happen when you shift, or does the grinding continue constantly?...just seems strange that all the gears are doing it...

I sir am RiDONKulous...I didn't realize there were 3 pages...so if the above is stupid I apologize...disregard the clutch crap...I now understand it started in 3rd...So most likely a slew of new guts will be needed...but still maybe try to talk about the end cap issue...

Linux---Too bad you're not around here, I know a tranny guy who will rebuild any tranny for me for $100 plus parts. I guess it's for the better, since he's out of town for 2 weeks and you need it ASAP!!!

Installshield,

The problem is 3rd gear. After I let off the clutch, and engage 3rd, it constantly grinds/clatters. Every other gear works like normal, but I hear a slight chatter like 3rd gear is rubing freely on other s***. Just like you describe above with your 5th.

yeah sorry for the ignorance dude...I started with just a little of the entire info...

Mine started chattering a little in 5th at around 70mph...it always made a good bit of gear noise it seemed, but I noticed it getting worse (in every gear for that matter)...and did nothing...then within a few days of noticing more noise, it started popping out of gear when i would lift off the throttle quickly...finally it literally popped during an attempted pass on the highway, and then after a shift to fourth I noticed it too would pop out of gear into neutral (as well as every other gear then)...then I did something about it...

but since the boxes are nearly identical, and the probes had even less room underneath than the protege...I still think a good tech could get to things adequatly with the box still installed...They can remove the timing belt side engine mount as well as the gearbox "hanging" mount, and somewhat pivot the engine/transaxle downward to acces the end cap...Ultimately it will depend on what actually needs replaced (I don't think that cap will grant any better acces to the diff and enclosure)...and also if you can't source a decent used box for a good price...and if you need or want a full rebuild anyway this won't save any money...just mentioning my experience if you are on a budget...
