2G Hubs on a 1G?

It would help to know your year and trim level. Your best bet is to get the complete rear end off a GSL appropriate to your series, eg if you have a Series 2 then get the rear from a Series 2 GSL. You can also buy the complete front and rear suspension from a GSL-SE and it will bolt right up. This nets you an improved suspension plus a wider selection of wheels as the SE has a different (more standard) bolt pattern.

Putting second gen hubs on a first gen requires a lot of changes if you go with the five bolt units. There is a company that offers kits to permit this, but you have to buy all new rear axles. The four bolt second gens have the same bolt pattern as the SE trim, so it would just be easier to use the SE components as I mentioned above.

I don't know of anyone at this time that offers a kit to replace your rear drums with discs. There has been some talk of it being done but nothing has come of it.

in the end it would be much cheaper to pick up a gsl-se full rear end swap...but judging by your screen name anything aside from finding a disc rear in the junkyard may be outa your budget range.

Best to note that the GSL-SE wheel bolt pattern is different from the 12As, so if he only puts on the rear then he will have two different styles of wheels. Either go with the GSL rear (same bolt pattern), or the complete front/rear GSL-SE setup.

lol I picked it up for $300 for a Race called the 24hoursoflemons.com race
it runs great and has 70k on it! but lots of rust.

o and i found that the GLS 1st gen have disk brakes and you can swap the hubs"most likely" the guy at the Mazda shop says lol

Like I said, we need to know what year you have. Mazda changed the size of the axles in '84, so if you try putting them on an earlier model they won't work. The input flange is also bigger so an earlier driveshaft won't bolt up to the rear end. If it is in your budget just buy the complete GSL rear end. That will net you the discs and an LSD.

For my '85 GS, I used a rear end from a GSL. If you take the entire rear end, you get the rear discs (which are nice) and a Limited Slip rear end (which is great).

.

if you wanna spend some cash, get a 8.8 ford rear from a fox body. perfect fitment. Grannys speed shop has a bolt in kit for it... then you'll actually have gear choices too
