2017 Mazda CX-5 Crash Test

Ouch!

Front of the car seems to do a pretty good job collapsing to absorb the impact. Will be curious to see what the score ends up being.

35 MPH... Love the different angles and the underside video of the waves rippling through the chassis.

Exactly why I would never buy a previously wrecked salvage vehicle...(thought)

Man, that is seriously impressive. Compare that to a car from even 15 years ago, and it's night & day.

Thankful to have my wife and kid in one of these.

Can't say that! Look again at your new-car window sticker. Your 2016(.5) CX-5 has one of the worst 3-star rating from NHTSA frontal crash test on passenger side among the same compact CUV class! (boom02)

Do those crash dummies wear seat-belts? If so, it is amazing how far forward they go. If not for the air-bag, they likely would be dead.

No problem. Crash test results were talked about a while ago in another thread, but at that time there was no information so thought might as well post this.

ANCAP (Australian) Crash test results on 2012 - 2016 CX5 look pretty good to me. Ratings not significantly different to comparable SUV's. I believe ANCAP now pretty well aligned with EU equivalent.

Possibly the US crash test is different - are seat belts compulsory there? - they are here. I know that some years ago due to this, US cars activated their aribags at lower speed impacts than here, where seat belts provide better protection. That sort of thing may be a factor.

Something weird seems to happen on the US test results, the 2014/15 and earlier results are higher than the 2016! No structural changes between the two AFAIK. Did the standards/test criteria change?

Frontal Offset: 14.10 out of 16
Side Impact: 16.00 out of 16
Pole: 2 out of 2
Whiplash Protection: Good
Pedestrian Protection: Acceptable
ESC: Standard
Seat Belt Reminders: 3.0 out of 3
Overall Score: 35.10 out of 37
ANCAP Safety Rating: 5 star
Rating Year:2016

The 2017 might get slightly higher ANCAP results when it gets tested eventually

If ever someone were on the fence this is confirmation of just how great of a car and brand Mazda is! Glad I've made (and am making) the right choice for me and my little family. Stay safe everyone.

We're not looking at a 2016.5, we're looking at a 2017.

Yeah I'm aware this thread is discussing the 2017 CX-5. But Fishah has a 2016.5 CX-5 Touring. His wife may not be as safe as he'd like to believe, sitting on the front passenger seat of their 2016.5 CX-5 based on NHTSA's rating.

Now for 2017 CX-5, NHTSA has downgraded the Side Crash scores on front passenger side and combined rear seat from 5 to 4 stars. This means 2017 CX-5 may not be as safe as 2016 CX-5 for both wife and kid during the side crash!

Is the roof safest then, I can extend the steering wheel - this is why I got the one with moonroof, just in case.

Ah, that's correct. It's actually her car though, so she's the driver and the kid is in the back seat.

I'll make sure she wears her helmet when riding shotgun.

This crash is at 35 MPH? It seemed faster in the video. But then, maybe people won't buy the car if they'd seen the 50 MPH crash test.

Sometimes they speed up the video speed for what ever reason
