Oh gotcha. My 16 has one. Guess in 2017, removing the CD player in cars is like removing the headphone jack in smartphones. Both stupid and completely unnecessary.

It's still different. CD has only 2-channel sound tracks for stereo sound or simulated surround sound with Centerpoint on, but DVD has 5-channel sound tracks which can offer true 5.1 surround sound. We only have a CD player in 2016(.5) CX-5, not a DVD player like Mattyredsox's JDM CX-5.

I believe most DVD carry Dolby Digital 5.1-channel surround sound with five discrete full-range (2020,000 Hz) channels and the sixth low-frequency channel. Any digital audio data format would be more or less compressed as fas as I know.

They seem to be weighing up the number of actual users vs benefits of having the CD player.

Could be most people stream or listen to mp3's via usb in specific and therefore the decision made to remove the CD player in those countries

While some specific encoders might drop high frequency content altogether, it is not a function required by the spec.
What they probably do is drop frequency components of low power when played at the same instant with other components with higher power, or make them less accurate, by using less bits. Good encoders with good bit rate will certainly introduce errors, but most people will not be able to hear the difference.
I am not an audiophile and for me 128 kbps sounds the same as the uncompressed samplings, below that I start to notice stuff and at 56 Kbps it is pretty obvious, though AAC holds its own better. At high 320 Kbps VBR AAC, I don't think there are many humans which can hear the difference, if at all.
I definitely can't hear anything past 15KHz anymore, unfortunately.

Except like the headphone jack, the consumer isn't gaining anything by them removing it. Yes, majority may not use the headphone jack but there is no reason to remove it. Just like the cd player. No reason it has to be removed. Especially in a car.

doesn't look like an easy retrofit at all, the dash panel above the vents has to be replaced and even then,

a left hand drive dash panel with CD slot cutout may not even exist,

maybe they only tooled and molded up for right hand side Japanese models dash with CD cutouts....

anyone know if Canadian CX-5's have CD's ? if not then US owners are out of luck with OEM retrofit,

Anyway of adding an aftermarket CD player via the AUX channel? I miss my CD stacker in the old car! Pretty sure the AUS model CX-5 also doesn't come with CD player either I'm not thinking of upgrading yet so.

The rerelease of Sgt. Peppers came out last Friday, with both the DVD audio and the Bluray audio discs in the box set. They were not "short lived", they are still going on. While not everyone is an audio file, Mazda is unnecessarily knocking out a segment of the market by not leaving the CD/DVD players in the car, or even a space to install one as an after purchase option in North America. While some customers might not care about this, enough do where it should be an option. Again, I'm very happy that my car came with one, and I made a clear point to tell the sales guys that they had best keep it in the future.

That's awesome. The bose system in the CX5 is very good compared to the bose system in my last car Mazda3. I do usually listen with centerpoint turned off tho. I enjoy having a sound stage from right in front of me and not from all different directions.

All I can say is the Bose system in our CX-5, since it has been broken in, is great. I originally thought it was subpar to the B&O in my A4, but now I'm not so sure. Turned the bass and treble up a bit. Especially love the sound from the tweeters, and I'm surprised to say that about Bose. (No highs, no lows, must be Bose.) I also find Centerpoint sounds better. Less bass, but more definition. To each his own.

If I want to listen to DVD-Audio, my A4 still has it and it sounds incredible, but I will be the first to admit it is going away and we just need to adapt to that. I never listen to CDs anymore.

I like the Bose system that I have and looking forward to the new one

All my music is on a USB thumb drive. So won't miss not having a cd-player
