see page 591, still very low PTU oil capacity: Transfer case oil 0.45 L (0.48 US qt, 0.40 Imp qt)

on page 590, no longer 75W140 gear oil, now using Mazda Long Life Hypoid Gear Oil SG1

Again, still listed as lifetime oil, see section 6-4 for maintenance schedule (change PTU only if submerged in water)

looks like you can buy 3 quart on eBay for $90, http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mazda-long-life-hypoid-gear-oil-sg1-3-qt-kit-/271957702184

sidenote: wow sign of the times, check out the bulb replacement chart on pages 593-594 (mostly all LED's now) no more trips to the local Wal-mart to get replacement bulbs ?

wow, just wow, has Mazda not learned anything from the 2007-2015 PTU failures ???

I guess, I'll play it safe and get the FWD model and get dedicated snow tires

Looks like the transfer case on new CX-9 is the same or similar to CX-5's based on the gear lubricant used and capacity. On CX-5 AWD, the transfer case and rear differential both have drain plug. People in CX-5 forum are replacing gear lubricant as early as 20K miles but I think it's an overkill. Although there's no specific maintenance schedule on CX-5's transfer case and rear differential, but one thing for sure is that you do want replace the lubricant immediately like the owner's manual suggested if your CX-5 or new CX-9 went through a deep water as one CX-5 member had learned a hard lesson.

LEDs in headlights and taillights are nice and they're supposed to be more reliable than incandescent bulbs. But you do pray any of the LEDs doesn't fail as you have to replace the entire unit! They're very expensive too as each CX-5 LED headlight unit costs $1,250 MSRP! I can only imagine the LED headlight on new CX-9 is even more expensive!

CX-5 PTU doesn't look much different than old CX-9 PTU,

Looks like same setup, transmission input on the side and driveshaft axle output, looks like just a simple gearbox that transfer power to the rear wheels

Yrwei52,
Are you positive there's a drain plug in the CX5? According to this post, the old oil needs to be pumped out, no drain plug,

Yeah, there're definitely drain holes on front transfer case and rear differential for CX-5, and I believe the same i-ActivSense AWD in new CX-9 has these too:

Rear Diff and Transfer Case Fluid Change: tools parts and links

Chris_Top_Her in your link said:
I had mine done at 30k on my last cx-5. I didn't do it myself because I didn't want to be bothered with a pump to empty it.

But later he changed his stance in the link I provided:
I had my changed at 30k on my old cx-5. I didn't want to do it because it has a sideways drain hole and you need a hand pump.

Thanks yrwei52, you are right, the CX5 front transfer case does have a drain plug,

shown in kedis' post #8 (link below) however the illustration shows a drain plug at the bottom of the front PTU transfer case and the fill plug on the side. It calls out for 85W90 oil, new CX9 uses Mazda long life SG1 (not sure about the difference).

Kedis' post#5 in the link below shows the rear differential illustration which shows a sidewall drain plug and I think that's what chris_top_her was referring to.

Anyways, that makes life alot easier to maintain these things considering such low oil capacity again (1/2 liter really isn't that much to last a lifetime) considering the CX5 owners are already seeing sludge and gunk on the drain plugs at 30k miles,

hope the new CX9 PTU has a drain plug at the bottom also. Mazda's interpretation of "lifetime oil" and owners' interpretation are completely different, for Mazda lifetime means 60,000 miles.

anyone notice the recommended frequent spark plugs change interval,

every 40,000 miles, hope they are easy to get to.......

good catch Mazdadude, I didn't even realize that was Schedule 2 Severe Driving Chart,
Schedule 1 is normal driving, but still shows 40,000 miles for spark plugs,
I don't recall ever owning a vehicle that requires changing plugs at that low of a mileage......

For CX-5 the spark plug replacement interval is 75,000 miles on either Schedule 1 or Schedule 2. 40,000 miles for spark plug replacement interval is pretty frequent in modern standard. I imagine the added turbo has something to do with it. BTW, these spark plugs for SkyActiv-G engines are very expensive, PY8V-18-110 for CX-9 is listed at $30.95 EACH!

Spark plugs are easy to change on I-4 configuration, even with turbo.

just wondering, any 2016 Signature or AWD owners planning to change the transfer case (PTU) oil at regular intervals ?

i.e. every 20,000 miles

Any 2016 Signature or 2016 AWD owners check to see if the transfer case has a drain plug, there probably is, most likely Mazda got rid of that Ford junk PTU and replaced it with same as CX-5 transfer case which does have a drain plug, still 1/2 a liter if very very little oil, no way it's lifetime.
