2015 Mazda CX-5 Rear liftgate won't open

So weird issue with my 2015 Mazda CX-5 that I am hoping someone else had and found a fix for.

Rear liftgate will intermittently not open, press the button at the liftgate and it does nothing. Have had this as an ongoing issue for years, brought it in to Mazda while it was under warranty a bunch of times but when I would bring it in it would open for them so they couldn't diagnose it, eventually they did see it happen (but after warranty expired) so I went ahead with repairs, so far they have changed the button, the full actuator and a driver side door handle and nothing worked.

The weird part of the intermittent nature is it only happens in cold weather, live in Canada, so when it first happened it had to be extreme cold like -20C, but it has progressively gotten worse that it can get stuck in less cold temps, but it can go spring/summer/fall without getting stuck at all (unless there is a weird overnight drop in temps), once the car has had a chance to warmup it will usually open, once it has opened once it usually stays open/working unless it is super cold out and then it will get stuck closed until the car warms up again, if it is really really cold there are times that it won't warmup enough at all and be completely stuck for a day, another thing that does sometimes allow it to open when its semi-cold is doing a couple cycles of lock/unlock at the drivers door button. With the cold temps it would seem like maybe a moisture issue possibly but rain has zero affect on it.

when it is stuck closed I can hear/feel that it is the button just not doing anything, the button is basically just dead and clicking it does nothing. Sometimes when it is only a bit cold just clicking the liftgate button a few times will get it to open, the button will be dead and then all of a sudden it will open. Does seem to have something to do with the locking cycle because I have had times when I've messed around with it in the cold, have it where the button is working and opening the liftgate, try it like 3-5 times, then I lock the car, unlock the car and the button is stuck again.

This issue has been driving me nuts but at this point I've almost put a $1000 into parts/labour that hasn't changed a thing so I don't want to bring it in again for the techs to just play guessing games without something more concrete to look at.

If anyone has had something along these lines and been able to get it fixed, would really be interested to hear what was done.

Since cold weather causes greases/oils to thicken I'd try spraying the latch assembly copiously with a solvent like electrical contact cleaner which is less noxious/nasty than brake cleaner and spray with a dry (teflon type) lubricant. Also things contract when cold and can stick so have you tried pushing down on the tailgate while pressing the unlock button to see if it unlocks. Also, when the hatch is open can you notice the latch unlocking when pushing the button. There's no tension on it at this time so maybe a mechanical adjustment might be needed if it operates when not closed.
