2012 CX-9: Any changes expected?

Hey All,

Does anyone have info if a facelift/re-design is expected for 2012 or 2013 model year?

We are trying to decide whether to buy a 2011 now, or wait for a 2012/2013 model year.

thanks!

There will (supposedly) be a new CX-9 either in 2013 or 2014 which will have a direct injection engine yielding 30+mpg. If its not until the 2014 model, then I would not expect any changes at all for the 2012/2013, from the 2011. I have no idea if Mazda will still be utilizing the Mazda CD3-2 platform (A Ford platform designed by Mazda), or utilize the EUCD2 (European CD2 Platform), or use their own platform. I was under the impression that Mazda has separated from Ford (as far as "the company" is concerned) but perhaps I am mistaken. I read an article in a recent auto magazine stating that Mazda was really putting out some impressive interior designs due to their new found "freedom" from sharing crappy Ford interior parts and/or part molds, due to Mazda becoming its own company again. If this is the case, I would think the next gen. CX-9 will be VASTLY different (in a good way), not that the current CX-9 is at all bad now (except for things like the painted silver interior door trim which is a Ford trademark going back about 10 years where all the silver always scratches away on any door trim panel it is on, and Ford wheel bearings, and Ford engine parts). Thankfully, Mazda blessed us all with an awesome transmission from Toyota/Lexus.

helbigtw,
The red vehicle you posted is not the next CX-7, but the new CX-5, which will be smaller than the CX-7.
CX-5 will compete heads-on against CR-V, RAV4, and the like.
Starting with CX-5, a lot of SkyActiv technologies will go into new vehicles.
With CX-5 coming as 2012, the earliest possible remodel for next CX-9 is 2013, which makes CX-9 a 6-yr model cycle,
which is very normal for lower volume vehicles like CX-9.

I really like the styling of coming Mazda vehicles such as the Shinari sedan (said to be next Mazda-6).
Our next CX-9 might look even better than it is now.

No, CX-7 will continue AFIAK. The CX-5 is meant to fill in a gap. I have high hopes for the new Mazdas. I think Mazda has done a great job balancing their philosophy under the Ford umbrella, but I've heard that their ultimate goal is to become the Japanese Alfa Romeo (read: great looks/chassis/performance but with Japanese reliablity.

I had the same thoughts before buying my 2011 CX-9 last weekend. My dealership told me that they did not expect any changes and had already placed an order for a 2012 (pricing and colors stayed the same).

The expectation of little if any changes to the 2012 model combined with the current 0% financing and other discounts helped make my decision to go ahead and purchase much easier.

The earliest FMC (full model change) for CX9 is 2013.
2012, no major change before a FMC.
Our MMC (mid-model change) happened at 2010 (styling changes inside and out).
MMC usually happens right in the middle of full model years.

It's interesting that this is such a competitive segment yet many of the players seem content to let their models age quite a bit. There isn't so much pressure on Mazda because the CX-9 is still very competitive and winning comparison tests that include some newer models. But if you look around, only the Pilot is relatively fresh in the 3-row crossover market. The CX-9, Highlander, Veracruz and GM offerings are all pretty old. The new Explorer and Durango may be inching their way into the segment but I think most people will continue to consider them SUVs.
It's worth noting that as far as I remember, the 2007 CX-9 pretty much came out of nowhere. I don't recall any concepts or early PR. In fact, it was pretty close on the heels of the CX-7 introduction. To me it was a bit of a surprise. Maybe the same will happen with the next model. But given the CX-9's success and visibility, it will be difficult for Mazda to keep it a secret for long.

I just spent the last 3 weeks test driving every 3-row crossover/suv available in TN. Yes, I mean every single one. If I was going to spend $50k I would have bought the new Acura MDX. I got the CX-9 Grand Touring for <$36k. At this price point there is no comparison, and 0% apr made it a no brainer. The Ford Edge was a close 2nd imo due to the Synch technology and A/C seats, but the CX-9 looks and handles much better.

I'm surprised to hear that about the Edge. I've never driven one, but have heard bad things about the steering&suspension, and the Ford transmission that it has. By chance did you drive the Lincoln MKT? I briefly looked at those during my selection process, but it was too new, cost too much.

We looked at the Edge and the CX-9 back to back (this was in 2010). It is hard to believe they share a chassis. The Mazda is a much better executed design. Also, the interior fit and finish was much better.

I think Ford deliberately designs to a price point and/or tries to fit their vehicles into their model lineup a little too much. If the Ford models get too nice, nobody will buy a Lincoln.

thanks All for the info! I also confirmed with my sales guy that no changes are expected for 2012 MY. So I think we are going to pick up a 2011 GT right now instead of waiting.

Combination of 0% financing, dealer and manufactur cash incentives appears to be pretty good. Should I expect to pay extra for 0% financing?

NO... and you should be able to talk them down under 35 if you are good.

Do you mean a FWD/Nav/BoseMoon/PowerLift? I did not have much luck on the first try, but there are still two more dealerships to try. What' the best way to get quotes? E-mail or phone? thanks.

If you can wait a couple of months right near September, you will see $7000 off MSRP on GT AWD.

I think the best way to approach a deal is in person. Walking away from a sale is the biggest ego-crusher for a salesman, so if you continue to offer your lowest bid and just keep walking away each time if they won't cut you the deal that you want, then eventually, they will cave.

In September 2008 I was able to get a nice discount on a 2008 Touring. Because the 2009 facelift had some significant changes Mazda was giving dealers $4,000 to clear out inventory. We were able to knock $4,000 right off the price and started negotiating from there. I did have to tell some dealers that I knew it was $4,000 as two of them started off telling me that Mazda was providing incentives to move the cars but stated figures well below the $4,000. In any case, Mazda may be providing incentives to move the 2011 models but since the 2012 models don't have any significant changes I would be surprised to see incentives as high as $7,000.

You did not read my post clearly:
$7000 off MSRP =~ $3500 discount (considering the margin of about 10% between invoice and MSRP).
