2010 vw gti-r

typical 2000 audi s4 will go for 12-14000...with 75-100,000 miles on it. so yep..not bad for the money.great car and awesome for tuning!..I concur..But as for being more reliable that the 2.0 fsi engine..dont know about that..that 2 liter "stock" is pretty stout to least 350-400 whp...which is pretty nice..and I think id rather own the GTI-R though and build it up myself..than buy someone elses hotrod big turbo s4 and hope he didnt beat the living s*** out of it...though the s4 would be cheaper..do doubt about it :)

I'm with you on that one, actually. More fun to build up a car from scratch, if you have the time and money. The S4 is just an easy way to get into lots of power cheaply. But you're right, you'd probably have to scour the Audi forums to see if the owner was a douche with the car.

I was hoping that there would be a good tuning market for the MS3 once I'm out of warranty, but to tell the truth it doesn't seem as developed as the VW/Audi tuning.

im also having trouble understanding the curb weight this will have, because that 0-60 in 5.5 seconds seems extremely conservative for an awd with 265hp, considering the new wrx can get there in under 5 seconds with the same power output

regardless, i am a fan. the only part i don't like is that the dual exhaust is too close together for my taste (this is the same way i always felt about other cars like the porsche boxster or srt8 jeep). other than that it looks like an outstanding car.

i can only hope to see this myself at a car show or something. maybe at the phili show sometime around the superbowl.

Car and Driver just tested a new 6 speed manual S4 Quatro with 333 hp.: 13.4 quarters at 106. Identical to my present times with minimal mods. Although it will pull on me (due to 4wd), with 0-60 at 4.9 compared to my 5.1-5.2's, I'm pulling away on the top end.

I can easily pull away from an S5 Audi on the Interstate from 70 mph on up, as I have discovered on a recent trip to and from Atlanta. I'm sure he'd also pull on me from a dig, but don't underestimate what the MS3 can do once full power is available in 3rd gear with just minimal mods while still staying user friendly and reliable.

Yes, you can mod that VW-Audi engine and make some serious power - - -for a little while. If you don't blow the engine, then clutch, tranny, axles, etc. give way. Impressive numbers from tuning do not mean the car will be reliable. Having owned one Audi in the distant past and in now helping my daughter keep her Passat V6 running, I'm convinced that reliability has not improved and it is not good. BTW: my ancestors are German, but I'm not impressed with their build quality.

think about a protuned stage 2 sti and then add german engineering and refinement and sexy interior..and wow you got a pretty cheap alternative to a porsche 911.. just my 2 cents :)

You forgot about German "reliability."

The new WRX is definitely quick but the main reason for the under 5 sec 0-60 is because it only needs 2 gears to get there. It too has a 5-speed.

agreed, and im sure the sti owners were not happy about that either. im also not sure about vw gearing so would it make it to 60 in 2 gears or 3?

awesome comments from everyone!...As for the understanding curb weight and 0-60 times..I believe its like this..#1 I think there underating alittle bit...also it might involve 3 gears instead of 2 gears just like our ms3's to get to 60. Im willing to bet curb weight is gonna be around 3300...in between a gti and r32...I have no facts to go on..but if you slapped a awd setup on a gti thats about what a gti would weight..And vw knows how important the weight issue was with the r32 and they planned to make it quite abit lighter...as for pulling on a audi s5..haha right on! thats the s***..those are not slow cars..Ive alwas been carious how my car would pull on those on the freeway..so I guess thats answered!..and yeah once you go 3rd gear on in the ms3's its a game on..i hit 100 quicker than I realize and have to slow down! But the quality has improved alot..as for the older audi's I cant speak for em cause i have 0 experience..But I have a mechanic friend who works on cars like crazy and he has ALOT of vw's in his shop..and 90% are those dam v6 passats..the 2.0 tsi-fsi engine powered cars are good to go!

I guess we'll find out shortly. Although I'm confused as to why VW would drop in a 5-speed and not a 6. I'm thinking it might even be a typo as all their current models more or less have 6-speeds, DSG or manual.

As for the S5, I have a friend who has one but we haven't had a good, clean pull yet but of the couple of short bursts we've had, my MS3 hung in there. No way in hell we'd ever be able to make it close from a dig (trust me I tried, there's no point against an AWD V8) but a roll is a possibility I think.

it's so funny how much 1 gear can make a huuuuuuuuge difference.

normally the high-end sports cars reserve the 6 (or more) speeds, and the more economical reserve the 5 speeds. hmmm, doesn't another gear mean lower rpms during highway travel meaning better gas mileage? seems kinda like a misnomer

either way i like the car as a concept, at this point. had the chance to be a v-dub owner in the past but this might make me switch in the future.

Yeah, short & closely spaced ratios are great for acceleration but terrible for the highway. It used to be that 6-speeds were rare but just like how 18s are the new 17s, 6-speed boxes are the norm and the luxury cars now get 7 and 8-speed trannies (albeit, all of these have been autos so far).

If it weren't for all the horrible reliability I keep hearing and seeing regarding Audi and VWs I'd probably be in one myself.

That new gti looks nice.

I saw and sat in a 2010 at my local dealer. It is very nice, but not nice enough to make me want to get rid of the 3. Now if I were shopping right now, it'd be a really hard choice. 2009 MS3 vs 2010 GTI, I'd favor the MS3. 2010 MS3 vs 2010 GTI, I'd probably go for the GTI. Maybe in a few years, when the 3 is paid off and money is burning a hole in my pocket again...

Let's see - A limited edition more complex than normal VW - A poor reputation for brand reliability, and piss poor serve at the dealerships, at least around here = a no sale for me.

Before people start throwing rocks, I've owned over 20 VW's.

I now own Mazdas for a reason.

wow over 20 vws? u must either be really old or go thru cars like hot cakes haha jks

Leave Old Man Rivers alone. He has ben around since the rise of the automobile. Just playing also.
On topic, the interior is hot. The MS3 looks better on the outside though in my opinion. Also, the MS3 looks to have a much larger cargo capacity. Don't get me wrong, it is a nice looking car and all, but: a)They are super expensive to fix when out of warranty, and b)The R32 was 33,000 so I doubt this will be that far off of the mark.

can not front one bit. that is a BEAUTIFUL hatch. i would drop my ms3 in a nanosecond to take ownership of the gti-r... just my .02 though

This is interesting. Of course, price will be a big factor, but I'd like to get a look at this car in a year or two. From my limited VW/Audi experience, I've had no real problems. Our family car is an '06 Jetta with a APR 2.0 an DSG and the thing runs like a bat out of hell, and averages 26mpg, 90% city. We've never raced it against my MS3, so can't say which is really faster. But as others have said, there is a real tuning market for this engine, and it's supposedly bulletproof too, from what I've read and seen.

FWIW, the weight difference between my '02 TT 1.8L Quattro (Haldex) and the front drive version was 353 pounds, if you believe Edmunds spec sheets. Not sure about the new Haldex system though.

I will buy one of those if it makes it here in a four door, i've been missing my 02 Gti since I got rid of it..plus the VW scene is pretty hard core!
