2010 M3 HB Sound system upgrade w/custom subwoofer box

2010 Mazda3 Hatchback Sport

Decided it was time for an upgrade over the factory sound system..
Went with Hertz Energy components in the front and Hertz deici coaxial in the rear. They are entry level but the best bang for the buck by far and 1000 times better than stock

Metraonline.com said that i had 6.5" speakers front and rear... and of coarse they are 6x8"
but i already bought them so i figured i would make it work...

Here is the front door with the panel off.

Used a dremel to cut out the stock speaker and make my new ones fit!

Now for the sub box
IMAG0356.jpg

I pulled out the spare tire and junk but left foam there.

Laid down some plastic, then some fiberglass and resin. repeat till its 3-4 layers thick.

This is still very thin..

Let it dry.. which takes hours! then take it out trim it and glass it to the wood.

Next.. route out a circle for the sub and drop it in! Looks like i have about 6.5" mounting depth for a sub..

i will update when i finish!
thanks for looking.

By not isolating the back wave from the front and sealing those gaps up, you're going to have a very bad reduction in the quality of reproduction these are able to achieve. You should either pick up a 6x8 to 6.5" adapter or cut one yourself so you can mount those up properly. I suspect you will have little to no bass performance from these speakers in their current state.

Hertz speakers are awesome. I had the Hertz Energy speakers in my old Corolla, very good sound for the money. Hi Energy is beyond awesome but you gotta amp it to really appreciate it.

I'll probably look at the same Energy/Deici setup as yours when it comes time to upgrade. I do agree with captainobvious, seal it tight. I built custom adapters out of MDF in my 08 Corolla. In my old 91, I built actual air tight boxes and integrated them into the doors.

Thanks for sharing.

Hey I see a few different ways people are doing this. You had to take out your spare tire. Check out my spare tire speaker box in the Mazda 5 section. I'm sure the 3 tire is the same. I fit a shallow mount pioneer 12 in mine, and it sounds great. Just an idea. Been thinking of making more.
