I have an automatic transmission and would like to perform a tranny swap. Who on the site is swap expert, because I have manny questions! Such as can this be done, and if so besides the Mazda5 can the hardware from the Mazda 3 beused as a donor?

I assume you want to swap the the MT. And if you are going through all the hassle, to the MS 6MT....

the motor and tranny are the same in the 3 and the 5, some of the motor mounts may differ, but probably not. I have a 3 and a 5 in the garage, only difference is the color of the firewall.

Yes i currently have the auto stick and would like to change it to manual. All things being said, in theory I could use the tranny, shifter/cable, slave cylinder, clutch pedal all from the from the 3? Has this ever been done?

suggest you search the mazda 3 boards to see if anyone with a atx 3 switched it over to a mtx. might be a write up as lots of people on the mz3 boards like to do to turbo mods, etc., or the members there could definitely give some advice on the project.

Seriously, look for a wrecked Speed3 or Speed6. The 5Mt is loads of fun, speaking from experience, but the gearing is really aggressive and you pay for it over 65 mph.

gas mileage suffers.... there is a guy on a 3 forum who has swapped from atx to a speed3 trans. he may be able to help with some tips (cant post info here so PM me if you want the info)

in final drive gas mileage is virtualy identical. the MTX final is 0.755 and the ATX is 0.725 . almost no difference. plus the MTX has an extra gear the ATX doesn't have! more fun!

my mz3 is a 5sp, at 70mph I'm turning not quite 3k rpm's, but I don't hear the motor humming, singing, whatever you want to call it. I do have some road noise from tires & suspension, not much wind noise with the windows up, and I just turn up the tunes. I can get 35mpg on the hwy without trying in my 3. I don't know what a six speed what do in the 5, would probably be a bad choice in my mine based on experience with the 5 sp I have. If Mazda thought it was a good deal with the current gear ratios, they would have stuck the 6sp in there instead imo.

Guess you haven't seen the 2012 Mz5 Sport huh?

Its a matter of economics. Throughout Europe, the 6MT is standard fare except on the base 2.0L gasoline engine, but there the 5s cost more by comparison. My 5MT pulls just over 4000 rpm @ 85 mph. At 80, I think its 3750 rpm.

I can see how this can be a tempting proposition for those who want a manual GT in the states. Not worth the effort IMO.

The other option is to swap in the interior/electronics from a GT onto a manual sport. The moonroof might be a bit of a challenge.

not until today no I had not seen the 2012 Mz5 nor read much, if any about it. Wasn't impressed, like the 2010 and older, but not the new one. The 6sp I was referring to was in earlier models, and would be willing to bet the driver of a 6sp Mz5 2.5L will be shifting alot in stop/go driving or in the mountains or hilly terrain to even stay close to the power band on the 2.5L and the gearing. I noticed sometime last year that a non-speed 3 was a 6 sp with the 2.5L, which might be fun, but still bet you have to do a tap dance on the clutch to have much fun. In all probability, the only time you'll get to use 6th gear is on the interstate at 70mph in a mtx Mz5.

Doing 85mph and you're complaining about the price of gas, try slowing down to below the posted speed limit and your mpg would go nowhere but up.
