2009 Dodge Challenger vs Speed 3

Haha thanks for all the replies. It seems everyone is advising to get a slower car...but the SRT8 really wasn't an option in the beginning. And...dammit, I just want the speed3. I guess it's really not my "first" car..it's just..the first car that I owned. I live in Taiwan and the driving age is 18. I'm 18 now, but I've been driving since 15 cause my parents weren't around to drive me to school. And it's damn far away. I drove a Lexus RX330 for the three years...and if any of you been to Taiwan, the streets are incredibly...small. That plus about three dozen scooters zooming around you at any given time, it makes for quite difficult driving conditions.

But anyways...I'm sorry for all of you who suggested a slower car. And maybe one day I'll end up saying sorry to myself. But I want the speed3. And I've worked at some sh*t jobs..literally, i had to clean it...and saved, to be able to convince my parents to get me this car. I'm not changing my mind. :)

i seen the streets of taiwan (through a video) and they drive crazy there ... scooters and motorcycles everywhere, people just coming out of driveways when ever they want. If you can drive in the asian countries, you can drive anywhere .. lol

my girlfriend is taiwanese and the last time she went see showed me how everyone drives.

To the OP: that last post made things a little bit clearer. If you've already been driving for 3 years in a SUV in Taiwan, IMHO you should be fine with a speed3. You're still young though and in no way an "experienced" driver. I'm only saying this because I'm 20 and am in no way and "experienced" driver.

Just be smart about it and make sure to take lots of pictures for us.

Best of luck man and stay safe. We don't wanna lose a mazda family member to anything, let alone stupid decisions.

Yeah seriously...but the great thing about Taiwan is...we barely get the police involved, in anything. A couple months ago, I was stopped at a red light when a scooter-ist tried to use my back bumper as a ramp. Turned out he was texting and didn't see that the SUV wasn't moving. Well, it was a good thing that I look older than my age...and he didn't bother to check for license cause he knew it was his fault. Ended up paying for my repairs, and another 5000 NT for any trouble (shady)

EDIT: To Mr. Vegas: Yeah I know how to drive a stick. My cousin over here has a Golf GTI, and he's taught me a few months ago :) Parallel park, yes. I'm not too worried about parking and stuff...learning how to park with a SUV in Taiwan, I'm sure, is a much harder task than parking in the States.

Kaidao, good to know you have a little driving experience under your belt. Good luck with your MS3.

As a 19 year old male. I love this car.

I had a different perspective though.

When I drove my Mazda 3 I felt it was slow and too ordinary. Therefore I drove fast to make myself feel better ... lol

When I got the Speed I had no reason to do so. I knew my car was fast and it stood out. Not to mention the first week I had the car it scared the living s*** out of me.

All my family members told me it was a bad idea to get this car at my age. My uncle won't shut up about it. It was important to me though so I went ahead and did it.

BUT ...
There is a big difference between being responsible and trying to convince yourself you are.

I'm trading my speed6 for a challenger next summer. Why? Well I've always liked muscle cars and I work my ass off everyday to buy whatever car I want. I was 20 when I bought my 1st speed6, got rear ended at a red light 2 weeks later then went and bought another one. I was young (still am) and wrote off a brand new car. I've never gotten a speeding ticket or any other fine.

I think its about how mature the driver is, some young people drive great and some not so great. Hell I see 40yr olds drive like morons all the time so it doesnt have much to do with age when it comes to speeding and what not.

ok im 18 and i agree with what everyone is saying man do not make a speed 3 your first car i know your young and you want everyone at high school to think your the "s***" i was the sameway... i got a spec v for my first car and got in enough trouble with that i recently just got my license back and learned an important lesson... i know how u feel man do what i did get a semi nice car for ur first with a low payment and save some green for a downpayment on a sweet car for ur senior year i am currently a senior and everyone knows me as that kid with the fast mazda =D

Hey, I started off with an 03' Sentra Spec V too. That was an interesting first car. And then I totalled it.

But like everyone is saying, get a uses reliable car first. I was suppose to/wanted to go that route but my dad was looking for a new car so yeah. Save your money for a new car. You'll appreciate it more. Plus, learning stick shift in a slow and used car is better then learning in a quick new car. You'll beat the new car and everyone will think you're terrible for doing that. I know I do when people get new cars as their first and don't know how to drive stick.

Dont listen to him, the speed3 was my first car and it took me about 2-3 days to master learning manual and being in control of the car's power. The MS3 was a great car to learn driving on. I'm still only 17 and I have takin my car up crazy mountain roads and done some pretty cool stuff. Everyone says I'm a good driver soooooo yea buy it.

Challenger suck BTW

Well I can't really say anything. My first car was a 1989 Z28 IROC with about 450hp (Got stolen). Second car 86 Mustang GT convertable with about 350hp.

But I'll admit, I could have gotten into a lot of trouble. I use to top them both out daily. I consider myself lucky to have never been in an accident.

don't listen to sunny. lol. Just take a look at some of his posts and you'll understand why. Do your own thing, be safe and drive smart no matter what you get. Good luck.

Everyone has a story like that. Granted the car helped but it wasnt the one pushing the peddle. I had freinds killed in a chevette for jumping rail road tracks. THat car had 85 hp. It isnt always the car but the driver. I am a 38 year old that always made the good smart decisions and am not just trying to catch up. Had I had the fast cars in my early twenties I would be over it by now. LOL... Who am I kidding.

i'm going to address this because it's a really common argument for getting a fast car as your first car. yes, it's obviously possible to do stupid s*** in slow cars, but the chances of doing something especially stupid go waaay up as the car gets more powerful.

s***, i could get killed walkin down the street in freakin small-town kansas, but my CHANCES of getting killed are a WHOLE lot higher if i do the same thing at 3am in camden...=/

as for the OP, be safe, man...it's a fun car, but it's your responsibility to stay alive. don't leave your parents a lifetime of regret if something were to happen like bravik described.

I love how sunny "mastered" manual shifting in 2-3 days. Truly, he is a god among men.

No one will say "What did that prick do to deserve that car" if your a 19-20 year old driving around in a MS3. I paid for mine through Air Force benefits...its very possible.

But when you see a 19 year old driving a Porsche Caymen S (Like I did yesterday), THEN you will be saying "There is NO ****** way he could afford that car without mommy and daddy"

Sorry to get off topic, but what do you do in the AF? I'm stationed at Nellis.

As for the 17 old kid, how the hell did you get a speed 3 at 17. I am 23 and barely got mine. The Miata is a great car to learn how to drive on. It teaches you great car control with having little power and no aids like the speed3. And to say you master the shifting and the car's power is complete bulls***. You must be a prodigy or something. I'll look for you in a couple years in the Formula 1 series.

Handling of the Challenger FTL!!!

My first car was a nissan 200sx se-r with the sr20de engine in it. That this was unbreakable! than I got the sentra spec-v se-r, I hated that thing, I put so much money into mods, (rims, intake, suspension, exhaust, short shifter exe exe) and it was all stillen stuff. But I went through 3 cats, 2 ecu's, and 2 engines!! Luckily it was all under warrenty but I got so used to seeing that check engine light, i don't remember what the dash looked like without it. I do like to see the turbo spec-v's from time to time, those things are really quick.

Wow...so you have only driven modded cars?
