2003 MP5 Starting the Engine Problem

Not sure if it is a problem, but does anyone else have a 2003 Protege5 that when you start the engine it does not start right away. Mine is brand new. I was just wondering if when you crank it, does it seem like a little slow to turn over?

I had that same problem, but a board member helped me out. istead of just turning the key all the way, turn it just before you crank it and hold it for just a second or two then crank it and it come on quickly

yeah...i'm having that same feeling...i feel like my car is slow to start....and with the cold we're having here...it's scary...

My brother 01 cavalier starts faster than my P5 :(

If it's cold where you are don't worry. Before I put on poly motor mounts, it was a hard start. Sounds like a normal thing.

Yeah mine is hard to start especially in the cold. We bought ours in oct so we really haven't seen how it starts in warm weather.

Yeah my battery is fresh. I just got the car brand new Jan 2,2004 with 23 miles on it. It is just weird how it starts. It is like trying to start an old car with no fuel injection and you do not give it gas first. Very odd for a 21st century car and a new one as well. I am glad to see the feedback coming in on this one. I am glad i am not alone. It is not very cold here. 40s and 50s. Not to extreme to not let a car ZOOM ZOOM immediately.

In -10C and lower the car doesn't sound to great at wanting to start..

But it's COLD, it happenes..

maybe the battery isn't ment to handle the needs at these temps, who knows..

You can also get a block heater, makes for easier starts and quicker warm ups too..

My Protege seems to require a few spins before it starts. Always has. My 27 year old MGB cold starts more quickly.

yeah, my car does that too and I just got the car 12-30-03 with about 650 miles on it and it does have a hard time starting when it's cold.

Actually that's good for the motor, as annoying as it is. It lets some oil flow before the engine starts. My car does the same thing, even during the summer sometimes.

it's most likely the cold weather, as everyone else has said. my 02 has started hard the last week. are temps have been below 0 almost every night. actually, i was hopin the battery would crap out so i could have an excuse to buy an optima!:D

Well you can blow the cold weather theory. I have the same "problem" if that's what you wanna call it. It's not really a problem more than it's just there. It's not cold in Orlando :D

mine had a hard time starting when I tried out Shells new premium 93 gasoline. Instead of firing right up it would take 5-10 seconds of starting. I stopped using it and went back to the OEM suggested 87 octane fuel and the problem went away.

Yeah it is not cold here in alabama either. 50-60s so i know it is not there. I would imagine it is the factory battery or alternators that make it lag when it starts. Kinda cheesy but i still love the car.
And i have to agree with Mike R about the less expensive, powerful alternative to the Lexus Sportcross. I Could not find any Sportcrosses so I bought one of these. I have a Lexus ES300 and i love it and the Lexus name, but dang this is a bad little car.

We can all just agree that the car starts funny and the cold probably does not help the situation.

Fo shizzle my nizzle. Just odd IMO on a new car. Nevertheless, i am going tomorrow back to the dealer for my cleanup, to get that tested, and get a new wheel. My rim was scratched and i did not know it until i got home and washed it once

My stock rims were scratched on the lot before I bought my car. I just got them to take $1500.00 off the price of the car and left them at the dealership!!
