12.) Mazda Mazda5
  • Price: $17,995
  • Cost To Insure: $929
  • Curb Weight: 3417 lbs
  • Engine Displacement: 2.3 liter inline-four
  • HP: 153
  • TQ: 148

Driver Stereotype:
MX-5 driver's family car

Jalopnik Insurance Cost Analysis:

Typically driven by MX-5 drivers when they've got their kids in toe, the Zoom, Zoom nature of the Mazda5 allows for quick maneuvers to escape from the rest of the crazy drivers out there.

And as a reference, No 1:

1.) Hyundai Santa Fe
  • Price: $21,695
  • Cost To Insure: $832
  • Curb Weight: 3727 lbs
  • Engine Displacement: 2.7 liter V6
  • HP: 185
  • TQ: 183

Driver Stereotype:
Not concerned with brand image

Jalopnik Insurance Cost Analysis:
The Santa Fe, while having an unbelievably ridiculous name, is actually quite attractive limiting surrounding driver's desire to crash repeatedly into it. For complete opposite, see Kia Rio5.

I would like to respond to the Hyundai Santa Fe (butt) we pay less than you!

We are in Los Angeles and pay less than that for our brand new 5...

My insurance rate basically stayed the same when I traded my 9 year old Accord for my new Mazda5. I was pleased.

I'm 26, male, married, with one at fault accident 6 years ago. The problem is that our province of British Columbia has public auto insurance with a sole crown insurance corporation ICBC. No competition except with optional insurance which I went through Canadian Direct. My $1008+$825 insurance is per year btw.

Oddly, State Farm in Alberta quoted more or less the same rates for me, although I heard they're expensive compared to the others.

Something's wrong when a Mazda5 costs almost as much to ensure as a BMW 328 coupe. Thank you ICBC. Dkaz, that's about how much my wife pays for insurance on her 5 ($1850 or so).

I pay about $180 every six months for this coverage:

Liability: (Bodily injury 100/300) (Property 100)
Uninsured motorist: (bodily injury 100/300)
Underinsured motorist: (bodily injury 100/300)
$250 deductible comprehensive, $250 deductible collision

the $180 is after multi-car, multi-line, and safe driving discounts.

My insurance rate basically stayed the same when I traded my 9 year old Accord for my new Mazda5. I was pleased.

My second car is a '99 Honda Accord. Insurance for it costs about the same as what I am paying for the '09 Mazda5.

Just remember that our parents no longer pay for it, so that extra $ saved is always useful for critical mods such as booster seats or cargo boxes

J/k ;)

SERIOUSLY??? Wowza! We have great coverage and pay less that for both of our cars. Heck, less including having an extra car this one month!

yeah thats life here in Canada. Actually he's still lucky, I was paying 3200 a year before I switch insurance, now i am paying 1100 less

DKaz, try Johnson Insurance.ca I saved 1100 a year on them

Yah I'll get a quote from them when my insurance is up for renewal. I'm stuck with ICBC for basic insurance but I saved $400 going with Canadian Direct for optional instead of ICBC. The problem is a lot of people choose to stick with ICBC because they think it's less of a hassle to deal with ICBC than other companies, which in ways it kinda is but I've heard horror stories of ICBC screwing people as well.

Thanks!
