2.5T Cracked Cylinder Head/Leaking Coolant Report to the NHTSA

Letters were supposed to go out to owners mid-November if I remember right. Many have received them already. The letter is just a notification, you should be able to fill out the claim reimbursement form now. I've seen people posting about claiming reimbursements and receiving payouts on Reddit as well.
I received my letter (regarding warranty extension for leaking head) from Mazda today.

So I submitted for this last night at 8pm. 9:15 this morning I got a denial email. I am more than infuriated at this, if they don't own up to this, I will be inclined to get a lawyer at this point. It said in the email that my problem/submission didn't pertain to anything in the CSP11. When all the paperwork submitted....literally pertains to this one repair.

I called corporate to inquire, and am supposed to get a call back. I don't believe that will happen, as it didn't happen when the actual failure took place 2 years ago.

Anyone else have this experience?
Just received an email saying Mazda is still denying my claim. I don't get what the hell is going on. People are reporting that they are getting their money back.

Got the extended warranty in the mail today. Even though I've had my long block replaced already under 3rd party extended warranty. Something is wrong in your case, keep fighting.

Can anyone let us know if you submitted a claim and how long it took to get an answer...either way? Thanks for the help!

Just coming here to let everyone know and give some hope...We had to have our engine replaced in Sep of '22 due to this defect. After fighting with our local dealership we had to pay $2100 out of pocket for the repair back then. Received the CSP letter from Mazda in late December, applied for re-imbursement on Jan 1st, and was notified yesterday that Mazda has approved our claim and would be receiving payment in 10-14 days! Good on Mazda for FINALLY making this right.

One quick and final update. Received re-imbursement from Mazda via a prepaid Mastercard debit card on 2/3/25. Sort of annoying that it wasn't a check but I know the prepaid card benefits Mazda. Good luck to everyone else getting re-imbursed.

Same issue with my 2021 CX9, only 31000 miles driven! Just got my cylinder head replaced under warranty however Mazda refused to give extended warranty.

Well at least it was covered under your current powertrain warranty and hopefully the updated parts do not have the issue going forward!

My 2018 CX9 2.5T just got diagnosed by Mazda with the coolant leak at cylinder head issue and I was advised it needs a new engine.

My issue is I'm sitting at 129,972 miles.

Has anyone OUT OF WARRANTY been successful in getting Mazda to reimburse them for this repair?

You are more than likely going to be out of luck with that many miles and even over the extended warranty miles from the lawsuit. You can ask the dealer to call Mazda and put in a good will claim to see if they might pick up part of the tab but I don't think you will have any success. The way things are right now in this economy, every company is screwing consumers.

You don't need a new engine if there is no coolant mixed with the oil and the block is OK Only the head and gaskets needs to be replaced and the new oem redesigned parts are available for under $1k. Go to an indy shop and your total bill will be less than $2500.

I've been out of the loop for a while. Can you please refer me to the source info for the new OEM redesigned parts? I was not aware that Mazda had made these available. I'd like to have a 2018-20 Mazda again, but the cylinder head leaks on my old one have really put me off as at the time the only replacement parts were the same ones that failed before.
