I filed a safety complaint with NHTSA (United States). NHTSA can issue safety recalls if a vehicle creates an unreasonable safety risk or fails to meet minimum safety standards. Given that it's a known manufacturer defect and that the warranty extension only covers about half of the expected lifetime of the car, Mazda should not put a time limit on the warranty. My safety concern is that the car can break down without warning, and our car is driven in rural areas. This may not be as significant as other safety concerns out there, but it's a risk known to the manufacturer. If you agree, more complaints with NHTSA could result in a better warranty outcome. (And if you disagree, don't file a complaint.
