If it happens within the time frame and mileage it will be covered. That is a lot of time and mileage left. If it happens outside of that then the new oem parts are only $1k US and labor about $1500 so $2500 total from an independent shop using brand new parts. Not a huge amount for the head job.
That's pretty reasonable. Lose of the car has to be factored in as well. I wonder what it would cost to swap in a new engine by an independent? I would look into that too.

It's a shame that for 4 years Mazda build a defective engine.

If I really wanted the car, I would negotiate the cost to replace the head in the purchase price...

Might want to re-read what I wrote. I said "almost guaranteed" to happen eventually. Not sure why you would purchase a 6 year old vehicle that you need to plan on setting $6k-$8k aside for a failure that has a high likelihood of occurring. There are plenty of other used vehicles out there you don't need to do that for.

Nobody needs to set aside any amount of money if they don't want to. That's just a practical approach that I suggest. And that amount was based on getting the repair done by a Mazda dealership with brand new OEM parts, in Canada. In the US, parts are much cheaper.

Thanks for the replies. When I spoke to one of the dealers here about they said 120k miles and not 10 years, I even clarified with them. When I go there for the inspection, I'm going to confirm this because it contradicts the 120k or 10 years I've been reading about. From other research it it seems to have the potential in a small number of vehicles (though I had trouble getting exact numbers compared to number of vehicles produced). Though I decided on the CX-9, it seems other manufacturers have issues lurking in the message boards for respective brands. I was looking at Highlanders also but did not like the ride or the mpg and am not a fan of hybrids. Just give me an old beater that I can work on 😃. I think it's six and one half for what I decide on as far as risk and what I'm looking for since I'm not a fan of other SUVs in this class. I put maybe 8k miles a year on my daily driver. We'll see how it pans out. Good things to think about though from everyone on the board here. Much appreciated.
