I`m new here and a little overwhelmed with the huge index. I just purchased an SP3 and would like to find out a little more about the 2.3 Mazda motor.
Where can I get technical details and maybe cutaway views of this motor?

i would suggest taking a look at the mazda website there was some nice information there about the bells and whistles for our engines... the balance shafts, and the intake runners, vvt, and the such.

Timing Belt/Chain

Does this engine use a chain instead of a timing belt?

I`m sure you are right about it having a chain, but some engines w/VVT do have belts, like `01 and up normally aspirated Miatas.
I`m glad for the chain, though this seems to be a well-designed motor.

Not to mention all the older Honda Civics with VTEC, IIRC, they were belt driven also.

The chain is more a reliability feature of the motor I would think.
