1992 mazda protege problem

I wonder if anyone can help?

Our 92 Mazda Protege DX has recently started "dying" when being driven.

The first occasion it literally stopped, the gauges all dropped down, but the radio still had power.
When trying to restart, the engine would seemingly not catch
After several tries it restarted and was able to drive about 200m , before dying again. Had to be towed to

The second time it died whilst idling at an intersection, initially it would not start, but again after a few minutes it restarted and was able to drive home.

After first problem, garage put it on test for a whole day, found nothing wrong.
Battery is new, recently passed out of province inspection, so we have no idea where to start looking.

As the car is in good condition, with low mileage, and belongs to a new grad, we would like to try and remediate , but not if its going to cost a whole lot of money to diagnose

any input would be gratefully accepted

There is a commin prob with the ECT and Dizzy's on our year cars. Mine did the same thing. I changed the ECT, and took the dizzy apart and cleaned all the stuff, and it hasnt died since then. Coils are also commin. Im assuming its a 1.8L DOHC?
