had a few OHSHIT moments in the rain this week and looking at the tires tells me why.....

all the way down to the wear bars already
i was expecting 25-30k from stock tires, but noooooo

so, what's the best replacement?

Falken ZIEX 512...the tire will eat up rain, snow, and the curves like cookie monster...pretty decent tread wear if you rotate regularly...look to spend around 70 bucks per tire.

Wow, you got a whole 19K outta the stock tires? Mine were flat bald at 12K. Then again, 11.5K of that was city driving.

I got the Falken ZIEX ZE-512 tires. Like VermZ06 said, they hold up well in any weather.

all-weather might be nice, but i live in FL

we get dry or 2" of rain on the road and not much in between
if the road is wet, it won't be for long

have any of you ever rotated your tires? I only have 10k on mine and there's plenty of meat left!

got 26.5k outa mine and that was through 1 maine winter and a bunch of city driving the first two years.

the falkens are a nice choice... some kumho mx may not be bad either. they rated pretty well in the wet iirc.

every 6k miles (every other oil change)

12k and the tires are shot?

You guys suck at driving/maintenance. Find a shop that will rotate your tires for free with oil changes and do it every oil change. Keep air in them and stop dive bombing into turns so fast the front end plows... Burnouts to impress your friends doesn't help them last either.

I'm not easy on tires but I had 30k on them when I replaced them and they still had about 5/32nds of tread left.

Rotated twice (4K and 8K), kept them well-inflated, and never burned out (risk burnout with auto trans? I think not). I blame it on the cheap stock tires and the fact that almost all of my driving was city driving (delivering Chinese food to pay for college (rei)) I never expected to get a whole lot out of tires with a wear rating of 200.

picked up a set of stock RX-8 wheels/tires (~8k on them) for pretty cheap
so i'll use them instead :)

You need to learn how to drive harder..

(burnout) LOL

The more you rotate, the longer they last

So if I rotate them every day, will they last forever? (enguard)

Rotating tires DOES NOT increase their life at all!
Rotating your tires only makes them wear evenly (all tires wear at the same rate).

This is common sense!

you are spot on, except for the part where they all wear evenly.
Not all tires wear evenly; they are all made differently with different quality and components. Each tire has a wear rating that indicates how fast you should expect your tires to wear out.

I might add that in a way, rotating your tires extends the life of your tire because when they wear evenly, you will be able to get to the last usable part of the tire.

time for new tires AGAIN

however this time they'll be going on rx-8 rims

why? cuz a +2 has significantly reduced my mileage - i now get about 50 miles/tank LESS with this wheel/tire combo than what i had - AND the car is much slower from a stop

current: 235/45r18
needed: 235/25r18 ?

need to get as close to what the 17's + tire were, but stil provide good enough ride quality and enough rubber to prevent the rims from becoming ovals

if they're cheap tires, then you'd be skidding all over the place instead of "zoom zooming"

fact of the matter is, you want good handling/traction, you have stickier tires... and that means they wear out faster!

you want tires that last 50k? go to walmart and buy those "long life" s***

Try Kumos Extas if they are available in the size, I have them on my Protege and they hold up well, they are summer touring tires, very quite and smooth. Air pressure should be about 34psi to maintain handling capabilities, at 32psi they feel a bit mushy.

kumho sts has been reccomended more than others, and i found a $40 rebate for them

only problem is i don't have $500 to spend right now, so i have to wait.. :(
