15000 Mile Service--How Much?

Right now my Mazda3 has about 13,000 miles on it and is about 16 months old. It will be time for an oil change when I return home from school later this month and given the age I want to get the 15,000 mile service done. However, I am afraid that this will set me back hundreds of dollars given how much oil changes at the dealership have been. From your experience, how much should I expect to pay for the manufacturer's service?

It should basically be an oil/filter change and check other things to try and sell you. About $30 is all it's worth. If you would pay $100's (what they might tell you) you should sell it first and buy an American car.

15k
1)semi-synthetic oil change
2) tire rotation
Thats it. Should cost you less than $100

Call the dealer and ask them. They should be able to tell you over the phone.

dang, wish i could only drive 13k in 16 months.

this one dealer mentioned something about a throttle body cleaning... i think they wanted like $220 for the 15k... i passed on that deal (screwy)

Problem with that they will tell you you need to clean the carbon off the pistons, adj the carburator, change the blinker fluid and swap the summer air in your tires for winter air... (stooges) Price will be astonomical... Best bet is to get your owners manual out n follow the MFG recommended services. Which amount to a oil/filter change and a tire rotation... They will do the mazda full circle inspection for free and your done...

Keleko Ive worked as a service advisor for 6 years now.. I could make you cry with laughter with some of the stories of stuff Ive seen/heard.......

Save your money and stay away from that offer. Especially if the car is running properly and not giving any signs otherwise. You might need a new air filter, but you could change that yourself.

I realize that not everyone has the desire or ability to do routine maintenence themselves. But in my experience, as long as you take care of the car and perform the routine maintenance called for, it will last without problems. At least that has been my experience with my 3 cars, which were all purchased brand new. I only go to the dealer for warranty work or for factory parts.

Well I did call the dealer for a price quote. The price is $180 and includes oil change, the inspections prescribed by Mazda, replacing the fuel filter, and cleaning the throttle body (I couldn't understand everything he said as his voice was breaking up). Do I even need the fuel filter changed and the throttle cleaned at this point?

It gets better though. Another dealer I called said I only need an oil change and air filter (he also mentioned tire rotation but I have snow tires that have side-specific tread patterns). Given that Mazda's schedule says I don't need an air filter until 30K I could forego that and change it myself when I feel like it.

A third dealer (the one I purchased the car from) quoted $225. That doesn't surprise me given that they tried to charge me $50 for just an oil change.

It's interesting to see how each dealer interprets the service schedule and how much they try to extract from the customer.

No.
Maintenence schedule doesn't even list changing the fuel filter but it should be good for 40K-60K.

Not sure about the location of the fuel filter in a "3", but in the MSP its in the tank and is usually good for 100K. As far as cleaning the throttlebody goes you could just get some throttlebody cleaner and spray it in there yourself. Also could add some Seafoam to your gas tank to clean the injectors.

I don't doubt that the tech would check your car 4 ways to Sunday, but I do doubt that there is anything wrong with it if you are not experiencing any driveabilty issues. Is that $50 for full synthetic. You can get 5 qts of Mobil 1 or other synthetic and Pure One or OEM Mazda filter for less than $30. Air filter should be less than $20. Its a good idea to check it anyway before the 30K service interval.

Dammit, I misread the manual and changed the air filter at 16K. Oh well, it was only 14 bucks. D'Oh! No wonder the parts guy looked at me funny.

Fuel Filter gets done at 25K (page 8-8) - hope that isn't an ordeal.

Page 8-8 is the maintenance schedule for vehicles outside of North America (see page 8-7).

North American maintenence schedule is on pages 8-5 and 8-6.

Yeah, saw that later; I was using an online manual. So do they have dirtier fuel outside the U.S.?

Yes.

Sort of a follow up. I went to the dealer who said I just needed an oil change. They were quite honest and only charged me $27 for an oil change (which is less than Jiffy Lube). Only took an hour. They said that although my car was close to 15K that my air filter could go for several thousand more miles.

Think I found my new "dealer"
