Hi all, it occurred to me that I never updated this thread.

Replacing the MAF sensor resolved the issue for me. While I was in there I also took the time to take off the throttle body and clean it too (it was quite dirty!). CEL has not come back since.

I was suspecting MAF from the 1st post.
My co-worker has a '14 Mazda3.
He had the same issue a couple yrs ago.
Replacing the MAF (which he bought online) fixed the problem also.
