'12 Five: Plungery noise right-front, suspect strut

Not sure how else to describe it; it reminds me of the noise that our Cavalier developed immediately after installing budget-friendly Monroe QuickStruts. Guessing on that car the shocky units of the originals were better, but it was awfully convenient not having to source strut-mount nonsense separately.

My question, is it considered normal for the Mazda front struts to go a bit wonky when the car isn't yet two years old? Our roads here are pretty awful, but the car is just approaching maybe 17,000 miles. I haven't yet noticed any real change in ride and handling, though it's not impossible the right-front is a bit softer now. I'm used to cars being at least 8-10 years old before deciding any suspension bits need replacing, but I see lots of threads here on guys rebuilding front suspensions on cars 4-6 years old, so maybe durability is a problem?
