11psi - Clutch can't handle the torque

umm to tell you the truth it might be your flywheel. To small and to light for all that power. We did the clutch and the flywheel in my friend camaro and had some of the same issues except we had to push it home hah, and this would explain why paul went through the same.

This is what we originally thought was my problem, but when we pulled the clutch, the flywheel side was brand new still. The other side was a little burnt up.

I have the spec stage 2 and it's great. I haven't felt any other clutch in the protege, but I can tell you that it holds damn good. MPNick has been using these for years with no bad results. For the price and torque rating, you can't beat them.
How much boost are you running?

Thats strange I have done 10psi for very long, kissing 11psi and no clutch slippage problem. Maybe Im not pushing the same Tq but, should be around your power curve.

It could be your Flywheel, did you machined it when you changed the clutch?
They were put in at the same time.

Dana, bring the car over Turf and I will do the clutch for ya! NO PROBLEM!
Haha, just a little road trip to Illinios. :)

Believe me, if you lived within 6 hours of me, I'd totally be there. :)

Well just do it in two "sections" of 6 hours each! That will get you there. And by the time you get home, all your break in miles will be on it again!

Thats sucks, id hate to be in your shoes. Dont go with CM i have a stage 3 and i hate it!
It engages rough as hell and i wish i knew about SPEC, i have heard alot of good things about that clutch.

my friend with a mustang GT has a spec clutch and it bites hard.

nice clutch though, because the stang has a clutch cable and not hydroulic like ours the pedal effort is very high.

i skipped page 2 and 3 of this thread but from what I heard if you want the clutch to handle alot of torque and still be pretty smooth for the street you need a puck clutch that has a sprung hub, like the stage3 spec clutch mentioned on the first page and some of the higher end exedy clutches popular in DSM's.

I know I just read an article about the potentials of the evo and the clutch they upgraded to to handle up to 600hp was an exedy sprung hub puck clutch and they said there was little to no added harshness in shifts compared to stock because of the spring design or somethin.

Like you said, that's the beauty of hydrolic, Mine feals like stock when I push it in or let out.
thats sad because i DO want the extra pedal effort :(

The bad thing about the 4 puck clutches, besides the harsh engagement, is the noise it makes, its fuggly, eveybody know when the car next to you in the traffic has 4 puck clutch.

is a 6puck any better? I believe that is what they used in the evo article with the exedy setup, a 6puck sprung hub, i think it was stage 3 but I could be off cause they never identified what stage clutch they put in, just that it was a sprung puck style.
I only remember because they specifically made remarks about how close to stock it still felt even though it could now handle the 4-500+lbs of torque they were throwing through there.

ON a side note that article was quite interestiing, i think it was in superstreet and it was all about what the max stock potential was of the new evo. With mostly flow work and some fuel work they eventually maxed it at 495whp, including a new IC. They had to strap a new mani and GT series turbo on to hit 500+whp at under 20psi and the turbo only spooled 300-600rpm later than stock. Amazing to see a car hit almost 600whp on stock bottom end and internals and not cough any of it up. mmm 4g63

When I ordered mine, the guy told me the stage 3 would be a lot more harsh on the drive train than the stage 2. I'm not going to be at that level anytime soon, so the stage 2 is good enough. If someone is pushing more than 309ft-lbs of torque on the stock bottom end, then tell me your secret!

I wasnt saying anyone needed stage3, that reference was simply that, a reference to another use of an exedy clutch and the remarks made about it. I was just trying to show how necessary it is for a sprung hub when using a puck style clutch. That is, in attempt to retain as much stock feel as possible.

I completely agree a stage 3 clutch is worthless in our cars as the tranny and bottom end will go before you ever reach the need for it.

Then again there may be a few people with built bottom ends and worked over trannies who might try.
