1000 mile check next week

Hi all,

so I've had my MS3 for about a month now, gonna get it tinted this weekend and next week I'll have to get the 1000 mile check-up done at my local dealership. I'm gonna buy some Pennzoil Platinum 5W-30 and tell them to put it in there. Is there anything else I should request/watch out for in particular?

As usual, your help is very much appreciated! Thanks! :)

put the pp 5w30 in yourself and skip the 1k check up. i don't trust a dealership to perform preventive maintenance. just my 2 cents.

My advice is that if you're going in for the 1,000-mile checkup, don't let them sell you on doing the 1,005-mile checkup at the same time. Something might happen in those five miles that they won't anticipate.

so you're saying a 1k check up isn't necessary?

what do you think i should do then? no oil change at all at 1k? just go to a grease monkey and have them do it? :)

unfortunately i don't know a whole lot about cars and i've never worked on a car before. i might want to try do my own oil changes in the future, but at the beginning I want to have it done the right way ;)

your 1st oil should be free from the dealership. I did my 1st oil change at the dealer around 1500 miles in a regular oil. I am going to switch to full syn after 3k miles.

Congrats on being among the select 2% that picks up on e-sarcasm.

Yes, a lot of these "check-ups" are revenue-generating ploys, much like traffic tickets. It's not a bad idea to go in for the big check-ups (30k, 60k), because then you'll have a maintenance papertrail and those are the ones where you'll get the tranny and radiator flushed, your brakes checked, and the timing belt checked/swapped.

no timing belt on the MS3. chains! but sadly, no whips...(whip)(whip)(whip)

Every dealer does things differenty. Some offer certain maintenance checkups for "free," as Kain indicated, to get you in the door. If it's free, no reason to skip it. But if there's a charge involved, tell them you'll see them at 30k instead.

In my particular case, my dealer does a PP full sythetic oil change cheaper than any of the chains or independents in town. If it weren't for that, they'd never see me unless a warranty issue popped up. (And if my back weren't so cranky, I'd do the oil changes myself, too, dangit.)

I stop in the dealer every once and a while to BS with the guys and will bring my own oil/filter in and let them do it for ~$15. They are happy cause i bring the car back to them and they dont hassle me about mods. They also have proof of the oil changes too so its not too bad. I skipped their 7500 mile checkup and will probably skip the 15000 checkup too.

That's why i save the receipts for the oil and filter when I do the oil changes myself.

6 qts Pennzoil Platinum (5.6 used) $24.01
1 Genuine Mazda Oil Filter $ 6.00
-------
Total $30.01

Knowing that everything was done properly with the right ingredients:

PRICELESS

(Besides, the dealership I bought my MGM MS3 from is 85 miles away. Too far to go just for an oil change.)

that's the point. i don't know how to do an oil change, i'd like to learn but i'm not doing it on a brand new car after one month ;)

so, skip 1k check and go to grease moneky with pennzoil platinum 5w-30 then?

go to the how to section and grab the oil change post. you can buy everything you need from walmart (rhino ramps, pp 5w30, filter, filter wrench, oil pan, etc).

a nutless monkey can change oil!

I never changed the oil myself until I bought this car.

PM me if you want the "how-to" guide that I used.

It's really easy.

The oil change is simple in our cars. No tight spaces except being under the car! Like stated, visit How-To section, find thread, print, enjoy! Also good to learn this way you can do your oil change when you get 30 minutes of free time instead of driving to the dealer and waiting for them to do it.

To the OP: Where did you buy your MS3? Im in central jersey as well, picked mine up from Weisleder in Brick.

I bought it from Westchester Mazda in Elmsford, NY. They gave me a much better price than all the dealers around here :)

to all: Thanks, I guess I'm gonna buy some stuff and try to do my own oil changes (drinks)

be sure to keep your receipts and document the oil changes thoroughly! You never know when/if that will come in to question...
