10 MS3 review- Edmunds

Yeah I test drove the 10' and couldn't even tell the gear ratios were taller. Felt exactly like my 08 and I knew a shift to 3rd would still be required to reach 60 in a fast manner. It did feel slower on the test drive as well.

These wiggles are the result of some kind of built-in throttle manipulation intended to protect the drivetrain from shift shock or to smooth the gearchanges. Either way, they are responsible for making the new MS3 slower to 60 mph.

Seems like they screwed us as it seems likely that they figured out the instant torque was eating up the motor and tuned it to limit boost at lower rpms or as they put it smooth it out to protect from shift shock...

But we're faster :)

I thinks its anice car..the front will take some time to grow..Im happy with my 09 and wouldnt trade it in for the 2010. Typical Edmunds style there times are freakin slow!...they have really good reviews..but thier drivers have alwas been grannys lol..we all know stock ms3 with good drive will do mid 5 0-60 and high 13's 1/4 mile with 100+ mph trapspeed...i remember when the 04-07 sti was averaging 4.6-5.0 0-60 in every magazine article but in edmunds they said 5.4..and the evo 9 which is universaly known to be good for 4.4-4.6 0-60 launches was doing 5.1 for edmunds..so try not to look into thier times THAT much! cause they are the slowest drivers in the car reviewer business. As for thier other views..their usually spot on..Yeah I agree that ultimatly they should have done some upgrades with the engine..maybe a higher reving better built 2.0 turbo..say 280 hp-260 tq..and 3000lb would be nice..or the same engne that has stronger internals with a better flowing turbo..or ect..........that subject can go in alot of directions..all in all though..still a great car for under 25,000...really cant go wrong..like the interior...the wheels are nice too..but ill keep my 09...But I do believe mazda could have done better..so ill give it a 7 out of 10 from just reading and pictures I have observed.

Feeling slower doesn't necessarily translate into a slower time, it just may mean you're trying less hard to do the same as before.

That said I haven't driven a 2010 and I'm intrigued with all the good press the car is getting because of it's suspension/chassis tune and I'm wondering if it is that much better. Tough, I've never really felt the 1st gen car was a handful or that the suspension was too harsh, and I drive the car around some pretty bad roads, but it does demand you put attention to what you are doing, which it should!

Here's a followup article on Edmunds, I found it also very interesting.

"The all-wheel-drive option was ruled out fairly quickly because of cost concerns — something Mazda learned the hard way in the '90s with the third-generation RX-7."

Whoever decided this, fire them. Even with its ugly smiley face, had it been awd, I'd buy it.
