1/4 mile times..

Anyone have any quarter miles times/mph yet? I would like to compare notes and mods to see who is doing what. I went 14.5@96 with 10 psi on pump fuel with some minor tuning and a K&N.. I will get to the track again within the next month to see what it will do with the exhaust and a few other tweaks and post the results. 14.5 isn't too bad, but I am still quite disappointed in the car. I'll get it worked out :)..

14.5 is pretty good considering you have stock exhaust on it. I'll be running mine after I install downpipe and boost controller. I'm hoping for low 14's. Then after 2.5" exhuast and intercooler hoping to hit high 13's.

Joe...check you PM's

stock exhaust but hollowed cats :).. It now has a full 3" turbo back and a free flow cat on it..

Fits fine- no rattles :).. I have some pics in my camera, I will get them to my computer later and post them.

The only reason(s) I went 3" are because no one in the area I was in did mandrel and I wanted a cat, so I upped the pipe size to try to make up for the standard bends and the restriction of the cat.

here is one.

the other-

The Flowmaster is the ONLY thing anyone sold in the area. I plan on replacing it with an Ultraflow down the road. I wasn't too concerned with the muffler flow because I was ditching the stock exhaust and it is a 3" after all :).

Shoot, I thought I got one of where the exhaust goes around the rear suspension, but I can't find it.. Must have deleted it to make room for another pic by accident.. There is plenty of room for it though..

when you hollow out the cats, isnt there supposed to be platinum inside? can you salvage that at all or what?

First time at the track

Just got back from the track with my stock Speed for the first time. My first run was a mid 15.6, but I ended up going home with a 15.318 (destroyed my dial-in time of 15.6 and lost the race). Unfortunately the speed trap on one side of the track was messed up, so I don't have my 1/4 MPH. I did get an 89.97 mph run, but with a slow 15.8 time. I also got to drive my friend's slightly-modded RSX-S for one run. I got a 15.330 at 92 mph, but I was spinning the tires off the line. All in all, I'm pretty happy with the times I was getting and kept up with my friend for the most part. I can't wait to see what happens when I get exhaust, CAI, and increase the boost a little ;)

joe, is that the exhaust kit that YOU are developing or did you get someone to do that for you... cuz i want! so thats 3" from the turbo back including downpipe right?

You have to understand, Mazda didnt make this car to be a drag machine, it was based more on handling. I can't say much cuz im makin mine a better drag car but it's gunna take time. the mold is there but i need to work with it for a bit.

That is one that I had made while I was in FL. The stock one is going to my exhaust guy so he can use it as a model now :).. It is 3" except for the cast downpipe section, which I will be making within a week- just need to get to my welder and such in my storage unit.

The thing is the car does not run like it should regardless of if you are drag racing or road racing.. It just simply does not pull the way a turbo car should. the car is WAAYYY to rich to make any power!!! I could care less about the ET- but the MPH isn't there either and that shows the power output of the car. I don't think I have ever worked on a car that left the factory with such a poor tune in my life :).. The thing has a TON of tuning issues that need to be worked out of it and I am slowly chopping away at them :).

So if it's so rich, how do we turn DOWN the fuel to get a better mix?

I am working on it :).. I have been able to pull enough fuel to get the car to run a bit more consistent, but still not perfect. Even a magazine article I read about the car said something about it "never runs the same way twice". It is slowly getting worked out though and I will let you guys know the results.

As for a P5 ECU- same issues from what I have heard from other reputable shops who have done turbo work on them. Above a certain point, they just dump a ton of fuel.
Joe

I wonder if the inconsistancy has something to do with what I heard about the ECU. It is supposedly always altering the power bands to accomidate the way the car is being driven.

Possibly, but it seems more dependant on air temp.. The car runs so rich that when it is cool outside or the car hasn't been driven in a lot of stop and go traffic, it is OK, once it gets too hot out or under the hood, there is too much fuel for the hotter air. It is not IC heat soak either like some have mentioned. A bigger FMIC may help get rid of the symptoms, but the cause is still there..

At least that was my findings after spending a lot of time behind the wheel between here and FL and getting to drive the car in the different climates.
