09 Speed 3
Hi all looks like I finally may get one of these. I was on here a while ago looking for speed6, but the deal I'm getting on used( NEW) 09 is great only 7600 miles.. Question I will have 5-700 to spend on a mod or mods what are the best bang for $$ on these cars. .Coming from DSM's, An we now how well they respond to mods. How are the Speed3's?

Thank you Mike

Short Ram Intake + Turbo Inlet = $240 from Corksport
Motor Mount Inserts = $45 from Corksport
TWM Shift Base Bushings = $30 from TWM
Turbosmart XS Dualport BOV = $319 from **********
Apexcone Raptor HID Kit = $45 from DDMTuning

Total: $679

Sorry to spend all your cash, but that's where I would spend my money. In fact, I did and I've had my car for about 45 days now.

I'd also add a race pipe $135 from Corksport and mixing all of that together should make you pretty happy for a while :)

LOL no problem, but how come I did not see a front mount on there? Is the top mount really that efficant? I know it probally cost more than 700 new but, could get one used no?

Skip the BPV. You don't need it, especially at stock boost levels (unless you weight pretty sounds as more important than going fast :)).

Skip TWM's shifter base bushings.

Buy Protege Garage's shifter kit for $159 and spend the other money saved on a real rear motor mount (not hating on Corksport inserts, but I don't think they can be as good as a real mount).

These are pretty much the most bang for your buck first mods.

Reason to not get a FMIC right away... you will enjoy improved shifter feel and your engine staying put more than the little bit of speed added by a FMIC.

As for how MS3's respond to mods, it is pretty much like a DSM (or any turbo'd car). Free flowing intake and exhaust=more power. The thing to keep in mind with MS3's is they are more picky by far.

OK but what do you mean by picky? OS would a intake and turbo back be a better mod than a cat back and boost controller, or is boost controlled by the ECU?

A catback is almost pointless on this car other than modifying the exhaust note. You will however make more power by installed a free flowing downpipe. With that said, I am running a full turbo back exhaust because I'm a ricer.

If you want to run a boost controller, you are going to need to purchase an ATP boost cut killer or equivalent as the stock ecu will boost cut around 17-18PSI. Stock pressure is roughly 15PSI.

If you are looking for a simple approach to make power, then I would go the route of down pipe, intake and turbo inlet and a Cobb access port or your choice of tuner.

What I mean by picky is the fact that the ECU is VERY involved on this car. I have gotten away with running an intake and turbo back exhaust without a tune, however I hit boost cut occasionally in 4th gear around 5000RPM and around 4000RPM in 5th and 6th gear. This car really benefits from a tune.

Another thing about this car is the fuel pump. Some people have gone fully bolted with no issues with fuel pressure (maintaining above 1500PSI fuel pressure) whereas others with intake, exhaust and tune have required an upgraded fuel pump.

I hope all this makes sense. I was kind of adding things as I thought of them.

.

Agreed on both points.

The stock catback is pretty well designed. If you want to get more of an aggressive note, I'd suggest cutting your resonators (or at least one to see how you like it) and adding a race/test pipe. The race pipe gain is negligible but it helps along the line when you add the DP. And yes, the DP is one of the biggest gains you'll get turbo-back, but you'll also most likely need (or benefit greatly) from a good tune.

The boost cut is a PIA on this car. Nothing like driving under load and watching the boost go bye bye when you're barely hitting 5-5.5k. I don't have any experience with the ATP product, but definitely interested in it.

And this car is ALL ECU. Since you have an 09, definitely look into a Cobb AP. Even if you don't go with a DP you can still benefit from having a good tune.

Thanx for the answers guys, I was going to ask about the exhaust and how free flowing it is. Sounds like for now I may just do with intake and DP,Maybe BOV.

Mods

Mod your car for what you want to do with it. I track the car at local HPDEs in NorCal. So for me, my first mods were an MSCAI, SS brake lines, COBB RSB and Saiku Michi OCC. Koni Yellows on order, but might change to FSDs. (sun)

I have a Saiku Michi OCC on order as well. Very necessary item IMO.
