08 STI Test Drive Impressions w/ Pics!!!

please read this regarding posting in model specific section's lounge

I don't know what that was about, but whatever.

I can't believe I didn't get a pic of the front seats and I'm sorry. The bolsters on the front seats are no better than the rear seats, they are that pathetic.

it just means that we have the 3/ms3 section for threads about the 3. If you want to post something about a different car you can either post it in the "automotive news, articles & pics" section or "off topic" section. If you'll notice now, this thread has been moved to auto news. Nothin personal, but were just trying to keep the sections clean....

I know it is your forum and all but I always thought of the MS3 lounge as a good place to compare MS3 to othe competitors. I guess I was wrong.

haha DEF not my forum, im just supposed to keep it orderly. Youre right to an extent, but we already have the ms3 vs. sti thread, ms3 vs. srt4 thread, etc. I just figured any reviews of specific cars would be best in the other section.

Get off your power trip man! There was nothing wrong with that thread being in there. I posted in the Forum Lounge where we can talk about anything we want. It was a comparison to the MS3 for those considering trading theirs. I'm trying to keep people in the Mazda family by showing the downsides of the STI instead of just the upsides. I think talking about the competion to the MS3 should be in the MS3 section. It also wan't just speculation about a car that isn't even out yet, it was something with substance.

No one was arguing for once and I think it needs to moved back, thats all.

not a power trip at all... my point is that this info might be valuable to ppl on this forum OTHER than ms3 owners. That is why it should be posted in a general area of the forum rather than in a specific model section.

I can see that, but I am comparing my impressions of the STI to the impressions of my MS3. That's why I think it belongs in the MS3 section. It's all cool anyways.

no hard feelings, but its staying here...mostly cuz i dont mod this section so i couldnt move it back if i wanted to haha, but also because i think the review/discussion is valuable to everyone on this forum not just us in the 3 section.

now....back to discussion

I only check the MS3 forums though so threads that are posted in other forums will go unseen by me.

Expand your horizions on here. As if I'm one to talk at this point. There is alot of good info in the Auto News Forum.

I also tend to only look at the MS3 section but I try to at least scan the other new posts for interesting stuff.

As for the STi, the red one looks really really nice but yeah, for 10k more, I would be thinking of a different car than this. Your review on the STi just makes me feel that much better about buying my MS3.

I have taken two guys out for a spin in my car from work and they absolutely FLIP OUT about how fun and powerful it is. One even got into a little spat with his wife about possibly trading in his 4Runner (thought)

Maybe I should take her for a spin (yes)

never trade this hatch for an suv. I showed one of my buddies my MS3 for the first time and the first word out of his mouth were "is that an SUV?" I was like "no it's a hatchback". And then the other day a chevy trailblazer was parked in front of my MS3 and I was just amazed how huge the trailblazer looked in comparison.

I spent 33.5k for my 05 STi, and it included a boost gauge, and short shifter.

They want 36k for a bare bones base model that doesn't even have BBS...wtf?!

To make it worse, like I mentioned before all the tests have it running several tenths SLOWER than the previous model! Another member made a point about waiting till they hit the streets and see what the actual owners can pull. The one problem with that logic is if you really want to compare apples to apples...I am. I'm comparing it to the 13.3 1/4 and 4.9 0-60 which the mags got, the same ones who aren't able to achieve these numbers in the new one.

More money, less performance, and a non unique stolen design....thumbs down Subaru. (spank)

As for the value, it is not even close. It's not a 10K difference, it's almost a 12K difference, and that's over the fully loaded MS3 GT! The STi starts at 36K!! I'm sorry, but you have to draw the line somewhere when you are talking about a car whose interior is essentially the same as a 18K economy car (the 2.5RS). The STi is all about performance, but is it really worth that much? Personally, I don't think so. This is what killed sports cars back in the mid-90s...the Z, the RX-7, the Supra. Anyone remember? I guess carmakers didn't learn their lessons.

Couldn't have said it better myself. (thumb)

I like it a lot that exhaust sound is great...I hate it even more though cause its so damned expensive it would probably be cheaper to fab up an AWD system for the MS3 and in all truth doing that would make a much prettier car.

So $35,6 is the msrp for a base model (with an invoice around $33k)

Call me crazy but I actually like the base wheels better (reminds me of the ones on the rx8) I'm not sure how much those bbs wheels would cost on the open market but $2k seems pretty steep.

The only other notable option is the nav system... While it's received high marks, $1800 is rather insane. You can through an AVIC D3 in there (which is arguably even better) for less than a grand (installed) and have plenty of $ leftover to upgrade the speakers.

So if I was in the market for a new sport compact, the MS3 would certainly be at the top of my list (can't beat the value) but this car would definitely be worthy of consideration. After things cool down a bit, I'm sure you'll be able to negotiate with them... $34k for an awd, 300hp bulletproof monster with a huge aftermarket really isn't all that bad. Sure, it's a cool $10k more than a similarly equipped MS3 but for that $10k you get all the things I just mentioned... which for some, makes it worth it.

Sort of strange how they F'ed up the seats... Subaru has always done a nie job fitting their WRXs with heavily bolstered seats. perhaps they're trying to appeal to the masses (ie. fat ass rich dudes). Judging by the limited pictures I was able to dig up online... it seems that the seat bolsters are indeed pathetic... but that the backing at least looks to be sufficient. I'd have to sit in one to tell. After living with the bad msp seats for all these years... this would be a deal-breaker for me. the rest of the interior looks badass though. love the steering wheel.

I would not call it copying because there is only so much you can do with a hatch design to a certain aspect.

There is a lot that can be done to a hatchback design. Check this examples and tell me any of them looks like a ms3.

I don't mind that the new wrx/STi looks like a mz3/ms3, because I like how both cars look.

Well...the new STI was designed with help from Subaru's top WRC driver. The skin was designed to be as aerodynamic as they could get it so it could compete with the manufacturers that are winning WRC these days.

Although not completely logical to say this but one could probably draw the conclusion that since the MS3 and new STI have very similar outward appearances, the MS3 probably has well designed aerodynamics as well. Of course, aero tests are preferred to know this as the bottom aero of the vehicle is just as important as the sides and top.

Anyone know the drag coefficient for both cars?
