08 Review on Today's CanadianDriver

Well, they seem to have caught on in Canada some time ago. Its the fickle Americans (yes I am American) that don't seem to get it when it comes to the 5. In other words, if it aint a huge behemouth with a honkin 300hp gas guzzler, super big (read: expenive) wheels and tires, and status sybol stigma, then its not worthy. Save for the soccer moms that just gotta have the FULL SIZE mini van with a DVD player and at least 2 screens, a audio headphone jack for every seat and a whopping 15mpg on a good day...all that to carry little Jane or Jim back and forth to school. In other words they enjoy and emulate the USA soccer mom persona and the bigger is better mentality and rarely if ever use all the do-dads packed into that $35K+ mini van...

How very true. Just look at the Kia Rondo and even the Dodge Journey. Same idea, but with conventional doors and a V6 for power(!) Everyone that has had the chance to ride in our 5 loves. Sure, the 3rd row isn't the greatest for really long rides, but it is good enough for a short trip. My aunt, an accomplished business traveler, felt at home with the airplane style window and proportions back there. But honestly, this is a car for my wife, myself and our child (probably a 2nd down the road)

As a commuter, it is a great car. Fun to drive, easy to get in an out. The sliders are a breeze that my 2 1/3 yr old nephew can handle! but it is not a mainstream car, and it's a hard sell to the value-consumer when there are bigger, more powerful alternatives.

But honestly, how can anyone get a child seat in and out of those conventional doors in a real parking lot?

you guys have different wheels.. nice..(cool)

yeah, it's sad how giant turdmobiles are the norm here. I've always hated them. I hoped as gas prices went up, people would start to stray away from them. But it seems they still buy them by the truckload. (sad2)

I've always liked cars that offered the most from the least. Not every car needs to be rocket-sled fast, needs to tow 10,000lbs, need to be 4' off the ground, needs 24" wheels....but apparently I'm in the minority with that view.

Mazda5 = perfect balance of space, comfort, and economy.
