03 Protege DX no 3rd gear!

Hi all....

I have an '03 Protege DX 2.0 ltr. with 119k miles that won't shift in to 3rd gear. Check engine light started coming on and back off about 2 weeks ago...2 days ago it started having the shifting problem.

If I leave OD on, when it comes to where it should shift in to 3rd, you can hear engine revving and it's like it's in neutral.

If I put OD to off, it runs but you can tell it's never shifting up to 3rd.

(I had tranny flushed by transmission shop approx. 3 months ago, long before problem ever appeared)

Here's what I've done to fix it so far;

1. The air intake hose had a huge crack in it, so I thought for sure that had to be the problem, but it didn't fix it. (although it does run much better) It still will not go in to 3rd, and check engine light is no longer on.

Any Ideas?? I would really appreciate any/all help you guys can give me!

Thanks...Vicki

Maybe a solenoid is burnt out. Or it could be the tranny itself and may need to be rebuilt :/ thats what i had to do with mine.

I replaced the air intake hose on mine also because it used to idle very rough due to the crack it had. Now it idles just fine !

Call your local auto parts stores and see if they can scan your car for trouble codes. Codes that relate to transmission issues may not cause the Check Engine Light to turn on, but it may register a code for a burned out solenoid or something else that can point you in the right direction.

Thanks guys...

'just wanted to say thanks for the advice...I hope it is just a solenoid!

I'll take it to a shop tomorrow and see if there are any codes..

Thanks again! vicki

update; 2 solenoids not clicking

Hi again. After testing, it turns out solenoid D & E aren't working. (no clicks on test)

Does that sound right to anyone? 2 at a time?

Well then looks like ur going to have to replace those solenoids because they are probably burnt out. Just hope thats the problem tho because if you were to replace those and the same problem occurs then its ur tranny and its going to have to be rebuilt.

I wonder if the solenoids themselves are replaceable, or if you'll have to replace the entire valve body.

Hmm...
