02 or 03?

Hi all,
I am about to join the family by purchasing a P5. I have done some research here for the last few days but I still have a few concerns that you guys may answer for me. (2thumbs)

From what I understand, does all 02 mazda have only 3 year/36000miles warranty while all 03 and up mazda have 4 year/ 48000miles covered?

meaning all 02 should have their warranty expired and 03 model will have warranty up to 2007? this is my biggest concern since I came from a car that gave me a lot of headaches and I just want to get over it by dumping the car back to the dealership when I have major problem.

Is that many majoy difference between the 02 and the 03? Known problem like the 02 gear popping problem and the 03 loose butterfly screws?

I often see people mentioning 02.5 03.5...... is there difference between them and the 02 03 or they just consider the car to be a .5 if they were made after June of the year?

afterall, if my understanding regarding the warranty above is correct, then I guess I have no choice....

any tips will be appreciated. (drinks)

there's nothing majorly different with the mid-year refreshes. do a search for it and you'll come up with a few threads on it. it's mostly a lot of different things. the biggest change was 02 had a regular automatic and the 02.5 on up has the sport shifing automatic thing.

can't help you with the warranty, though.

welcome!

I'd argue the biggest changes were the new wheels and the sidemarkers on the 02.5's. That and I think the shift knob on the 02.0 was different. Who cares about the automatic blech :P

can't forget 2003.5 had a spare tire subwoofer added as a no cost option (roof rack became an option).

Also IIRC, the 2002-2002.5 refresh saw a change in the manual transmission that made them stronger/more durable.

Aside from that and others mentioned, there was a cupholder change

hmm...i have a 3.5 and i never got the subwoofer :(

maybe you don't have a 03.5.. i know i have that subwoofer.. hmmm is it any better than the 03 subwoofer? what's the differences between the subwoofers?

Not sure about the 03's, but i have an 02.5, and yea the difference is just basically the cosmetic stuff, mainly the side markers as the previous person said, lol, you can set yourself apart by pointing and laughing at the person that doesnt have them and say haha, i got side markers and you dont!!. No seriously though, also i got the 6 disc in-dash option which i dont think came in the earlier model. other than that no major difference. As far as the warranty is concerned, when buying a used car I would just say to make sure you look over the car from top to bottom, and asked for the history reports, as in carfax and such. Chances are anyway, if you hand out here in msprotege.com long enough, that warranty would be voided within a few months anyway. I know mine was, and I wasnt even on here at the time, just to fun of a car not to mod.

I wasn't aware that there was a sub available in 2003. But in 2003.5 the sub is mounted in the spare tire and comes free. It's not the very best subwoofer in the world, but it sure beats nothing!

my 2003.5 MAZDASPEED Protege came with a 3 yr./45,000 mile warranty. The `03, I don`t know. Ask anyone on here with an `03. Just search the Member List /\ at the top of the scren and PM like 20 people. One will answer...

My warranty (2003.5 p5) is 48 months, 50,000 miles.

I THINK that's the warranty since either 2002.5 or 2003. Originally, the warranty was 36/36,000 IIRC.

Yeah I think that's what I have read but I don't seems to be able to find the link to Mazda official warranty page again.

Anyone know where it is documented?

My 2003 came with a 3 year and 50 thousand warranty that I used up in a year & a half.

Woo hoo I'm not even 3 years old yet and have over 85 thousand miles.

The 2002's are alot more prone to CLUTCH CHATTER.

However, the 2003's have ugly wheels, side markers and the guage cluster has slight differences.

How does that subwoofer sound? Ive been wanting a sub but dont wanna lose space. Thats the first time ive seena pic.

I bought the extended warranty for my 2003.5 (70,000 miles or 5year) I got the subwoofer (neat suprize for me since they never even mentioned it when I bought it.) and the roof rack.

I think you might find out after asking a few people that different dealerships were authorized different warranties. It's just a guess, but I imagine you will find different warranties for different regions and different times of the year. So I'd ask the place where you're getting the car to see if you have warranty left.

subwoofer sounds ok. not best in the world, but not worst either. Realize that in order to have the sub in, the floor of the trunk is raised by a couple inches. Some have pointed out it actually takes less space to throw in a 10" sub. (shrug)

Breegz, it should have said it on the window sticker as an option, with cost as (no charge).

imagine a nice subwoofer system, like one of your friends have. Then turn the gain all the way down, and shrink the sub to 5 3/4 inch.

It adds nice low response right where the factory system needs it most, and on the right song it will vibrate your rearview, but it's really nothing special. I have one to sell (minus most of the wiring harness, you'd have to fabricate it or splice it.) PM me and I'll get you pics.. it'll be cheap.
