Until it has more than 200K miles. (nana)

Should I keep my P5 or move on? Your thoughts?

Holy crap I wish mine still looked that good! I'm at 189K, and am not planning on getting rid of mine anytime soon. It's still on the original timing belt, clutch, and the trans is going on it now. Your problems, are annoying , but not too bad. Especially if you can do em yourself. And...

Anyone make replacement control arm bushings yet?

Without having to buy the whole control arm assembly? I'm nearing 200,000 miles, and the car is getting worn out. Autozone shows one of the 2 bushings available. Granted, replacing the whole arm probably wouldn't be that bad of an idea, since I'd also get new ball joints.

    Mazda Protege 5 engine problems?

Thermostat or it blew a accessory belt off... I'd think belt more than tstat. Would have had to drive it for a long time to blow the motor though. Seems like these motors are pretty darn tough. 185K on mine and I beat the crap out of it.

how well does the protege5 respond to suspension mods

racing beat springs, tokico illuminas, AWR rear bar.... and the car is a beast and rides only slightly stiffer. Handles like a dream. Lots of aftermarket, and the Protege/protege5 platform was used in the Speed World Challenge and didn't do too bad...So I doubt it is a poor platform....

    Shifter Question

I've got the MSP sparco on my B&M!

    Squeaky Shifter

the plastic bushins on the shifter pivot point need to be replaced. Also the shift lever probably has worn off the coating. I think those are a mazda only part. Better off going aftermarket. I wore the stocker out in the first year. Went with a B&M and it's still going after 140K miles.

Protege5 - How many miles have you gone before changing the timing belt?

180K and still rockin the stock belt.

    What's your mileage?

It won't hurt performance. The rear o2 sensor is only for sensing if the cat is functioning. Not for tuning. I run one and pull 35mpg. and I'm 179,600 miles as of now....

What have you done to your P5 today?

Got mine back together sunday from it being "totalled" Drives fine, just need to get it inspected since it's now a "salvage" titled car. Cost me a whopping 50 bucks to fix it, and I know it's better than any bodyshop could have fixed it.

Anyone with mazdaspeed oem shifter on P5?

    Clank, Pop, Knock..brake Noise Update:

Your struts are TOAST man. Those are probably part of the problem. The upper strut mounts could be causing the noise, along with the endlinks. The strut is the big long wet black thing the spring is in.....

Anyone with mazdaspeed oem shifter on P5?

I love my B&M shifter... Nice location not too expensive and it's really done well over the 150,000 miles I've been using it. I had originally modded the stock shifter by removing the extension. It was too short and was uncomfortable.

    Oops that hurt.

Yeah ,same thing thought i'd post the pics here.... The trooper was on the opposite side, never talked to him or stopped near him, or called the police. In my experience, they honestly don't care unless there are fatalities. It was 695 out by rt 40 around catonsville.

    Oops that hurt.

It would have been my ass.... Middle of the passenger seat to the middle of the rear floor...I am glad it didn't come through any farther. Luckily it didn't tear up the carpet. Hopefully it wont be too bad to repair. the floor will definately be the easy part...

Protege5 - How many miles have you gone before changing the timing belt?

Still going at 177K+, well kinda.... Trans is busted.

    Oops that hurt.

I was able to limp off the highway, by the time I got back by there the stuff was gone. There was a trooper on the opposite side of the highway, it was probably taken care of by him. Tomorrow I will start the teardown. I've never messed with a FWD before, so this should be interesting...

    Oops that hurt.

I couldn't avoid a large metal beam on the beltway.... punched a nice hole in the trans and a nice 12-14" long gash right through the floorpan. Also blew out a tire and cracked one of the Rota Subzeros. Insurance came out today, will be interesting to see if it's totalled or not. Car...
