ok, i've narrowed it down to two exhausts...

both are available for really great prices at apex motorsports.

the questions i have are...

which is louder?
which is lower sounding?
do either drone out at freeway speeds?
do either have mounting problems?

and, finally...

if anyone has pics of either installed on their cars, or can supply sound clips of either exhaust, i would love you long time.

thanks for all your help everyone. through these weeks, i've gone through the litany of exhausts available for the protege5 and narrowed it down to two very good, very nice exhaust systems.

picture 1 = greddy evo2. (sorry the pic is so small)
picture 2 = jic magic spartan sus series.

the greddy's going to have the lower, deeper tone to it. the canister shape of the JIC looks like it'll make a higher toned sound like that of an apex n1 or hks hiper. i personally would go w/ the greddy i'm not too fond of JIC.

Do a search on my name and JIC and you will find pics and a sound file. I LOVE IT. Great power, great fit, great quality. BTW check with rishie with AR&D he can get great deals on these. I know he gave me one.

We cant do great deals with jic anymore, because we dont deal with them. they got sketchy, so we dropped them. Plus the price of the exhaust jumped to almost 800 bucks.

I'd go with the greddy, even though I have the jic.

I have the avant on my car have you thought about that one at all, i paid about 80000 yen for it thats about 700 over here, its well worth it if you can find it here.

jic is a canister exhaust, therefore its loud as hell

the greddy is much quieter due to it having an actual muffler. its one of the most quietest ones available. the magnaflow falls right between being loud, and being quiet.

i just bought the magnaflow exhaust for $343 shipped from www.justmagnaflow.com

Just because an exhaust is a canister, doesn't mean that it's louder. You could have a muffler on your car and a straight pipe all the way through, with no cats or resonators and you'd be really damn loud. The greddy exhaust could be quieter due to the fact that they have a sound absorbant material in the muffler. Most canister mufflers probably don't have this metal or fiberglass mesh, but not all. You could also throw in a longer resonator to quiet the exhaust note. It all depends on how you tune and set up your exhaust.

alright, so everyone thinks the jic magic will be louder, which i can understand, since it is a canister exhaust.

but i've also heard from a lot of people that the greddy is quite loud, and basically turns the p5 in a riced out piece of s*** sounding *** mobile.

christ...this is so ******* frusterating!

Not bad. We sell it for $299 plus shipping.

ok, i think i'm sold on the jic magic exhaust, unless someone has some major point to make about the greddy.

still hunting for a greddy evo1 or 2 sound clip. i heard the jic, and the thing sounds so damn good. plus it looks hot. plus its a really clean install.

so...unless someone can sway me away from the jic magic, thats what i'm going to buy.

i'm also accepting good arguments for another exhaust. i liked the racing beat, but i just don't want to get it. and i'm not really a fan of the magnaflow.

i have the racing beat...i wish i would have gone with the JIC...the JIC is 18lbs...where the racing beat is 49lbs. i don't mind my car being "loud"...as long as it doesn't sound like a honda.

i'm sure the all titanium one is. but i'm going for the stainless.

weight isn't a big problem with me, since i don't plan on autocrossing or dragging my car at all.

i do want some performance benefits, yes...but not nearly the amount required for a good race vehicle.

i think i've decided on the jic magic, unless someone comes up with a really good compare and contrast for me.

the jic seems to be everything i want and more, and i don't think i'll be disappointed.

and if i am...i'll accept "i told you so!" pm's.

There's nothing wrong with the Greddy exhaust. Greddy is a really good, top-of-the-line company. Since you're not going too much for performance benifits, I suggest going with style. JIC is more of a JDM exhaust, and Greddy is mostly known for a great performance exhaust. Not to say that the JIC isn't. Also, the Greddy muffler looks more like a muffler compared to a canister, and the Greddy won't stand out as much towards cops and other drivers. I've never ever in my life heard a gay Greddy exhaust note. IMO, company wise, I'd put Greddy first, HKS second, Apex'i and Blitz third, then JIC. Exhaust system wise, the HKS would be last on my list because it's only an axle back.

IMO, I'd go with the JIC, just for the JDM factor, other than that I'd just go for which ever one saves you the most money.

this is the kind of answer i was looking for. thank you!

yes, in some ways i am going for looks with this, since i don't plan on racing much, and am not really concerned with performance gains (at this point in time.)

but i also don't want a super loud exhaust, because i do a lot of freeway driving, and coming home from the bar at 3am with a loud, droning exhaust just sounds like an accident waiting to happen.

nor do i want an exhaust that is really high pitched, so i sound like one of the 50 different civic's in my town with some riced out cannister on their cars, buzzing and farting their way around town to where i can hear them a 1/4 mile away.

the greddy is pretty quiet with just an intake. i was driving behind a p5 with a greddy evo exhaust for a while and it was nice and deep. not loud at all... however, aesthetically, it's not exactly the best looking system.

if you get the greddy, it'll look like this:

that's hardly a discreet exhaust, and in my opinion, looks quite bad, unless you want to go with the coffee can look.

christ alive...that thing is ginormous!

whats the tip diameter on that? 'cause i think the jic bullets are 110mm.
