To divert the air in the intake manifold, to have travel a longer or shorter distance. I think it's a fuel ecomony thing, but I could be wrong.
 
hmm I'll have to go look at my car tomorrow, but if aj is correct then it diverts the air between long and short runners...has to do with fuel...I dont believe our cars have medium runners, though most do...hehe but your finger is kind of in the way so I'll have to go to the shop tomorrow and look at it myself...

Yes it is the variable intake runner vacuum actuator.
 
sad part is the real name of it is probably 12 inches long.
 
We should turn this into a running thread.

Don't know what the hell that doohickey is next to the whoozafuxit? Post a photo in this thread :D

Close. The FSM refers to it as the variable inertia charging system (VICS) shutter valve actuator.
