Yahama 600R

I just got off the phone with the dealership. The Yamaha 600r is an 03' going for 6399.99. Theres a special on interest rates for a 2yr loan for 3.9% then 9.9 thereafter. I would do a 4 year loan. Insurance he said would be 1200.00-1500.00 a year with a 50% of that due when registered. He said its a great bike to start at but he can tell me anything.(uhm)

Don't buy a brand new bike as a first bike (unless you have money to throw away). Especially don't finance it. If you can't afford it, don't buy it. Buy a used bike. If you have to take out a small loan, fine; but don't go and finance a brand new bike for 4 years as your first bike.

I will 100% go to a class. It just seems like it has less power then most. I seen hayabusa like 1299cc. This bike is a modest 599cc. Im just getting different quotes for insurance.

I know you aren't looking at the R6, but just for reference it does about a 10.6-7 1/4 mile. Think about how fast that is. It revs up to about 15,500 RPMs. 600cc bikes aren't "slow" by any means. My friend can waste me in the MSP when he's at like half throttle in 6th gear on his R6 hehe. If you end up getting the 600R, just remember to be careful. Any mistake and things can end up very badly. My friend just got his bike a few weeks ago and he and I went drive/riding and he got cut off by an idiot in a truck. Remember cars don't see bikes as easily. Good luck learning to ride, one day it's something I wanna do.

I think it's funny how people's parents threaten their kids like that. My mother never really wanted me to get one. I came home one day with a motorcycle and my mother thought it was my friend's. I told her it was mine and showed her the ownership. What was she gonna do; kick me out? Of course not; I'm her son. Same happened with my friends who's parents said the same thing. They went out and bought one and still lived at home.

Oh ... have fun with the quads.

The R6 is a racebike with turnsignals. Get a SV650.

much easier to learn on, insurance will be less.

agreed, the sv650 is a wonderful started bike. my vote goes with sv

For your 1st bike, BUY A USED ONE! You WILL DROP IT! And insurance will depend on how long you've had you're MC license (well at least here in CA). You can get a 98-99 CBR600 F4 for around $3-$4K. And once you're comfortable, then go on and get a new bike. Don't waste your money on the Yamaha 600RR for $6400. You can get a brand new R6 for $7k OTD.

Nice ATV. Should allow for a lot of fun at a modest price! Make sure to get a good helmet.

The 600R is a great bike for you. I've owned 1....loved it! Great to learn on...then in the future you can throw some pipes on it and change your injectors and keep up with the biggies. The 600R wwill definately take you places. Get it...that price is a steal! If it's in good condition...

dont buy a new bike outright. youll definitely lay it down trying to learn.

i dont get how the gears work in a bike. can someone explain this "5 up 1 down" thing in more detail?

and dont they have 'slipper clutches' where you dont have to get off the throttle when you shift?

Dang Kid there should be a rule that says...NO posting if you have no idea what your talking about. Why would you want a damn "slipper clutch" as you say...on a performance bike?! And if you don't know what 1 down 5 up means then wwhy are you even posting in a bike thread?? Follow this link and it should teach you everything you need to know... http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.gsp?product_id=2292466&cat=92515&type=5&dept=4171&path=0%3A4171%3A104591%3A92515 (outie)

Yeah. I got the Blaster because its a nice 2 stroke beginners bike. My brother also got one and we took them on our street last night. It had real nice pick-up. I just got a little confused with the gears. But I like how 1 down is first and half-way between first and second is neutral, and the rest from 2nd to 6th is up. I dont plan on doing much to it except pay it off in 2-2.5 years. Eventually, I will step up to a real street bike but for now this is fine.(nana)

Dumbass. He didn't pretend to know what he's talking about. You should learn how to read. He was asking a question specifically because he didn't know.

Motorcycle shifter:
The shifter is a ratchet-like mechanism. When in neutral position, you have to push down on the shifter with your left foot to get into first. Then you have to pull up to get into second and so forth. When shifter from first to second you are actually skipping neutral. Hope this helps.

"Slipper" clutch:
In theory, you can shift gears on any vehicle without using the clutch, so long as the engine is turning at the right speed and you're doing it at the right time. It's all about timing.

When going down the 1/4 I only use the cluth for 1st to 2nd (but I feather it). The rest of the gears I just go through them with wide-open-throttle. You can technically do the same with a car, although it's certainly not recommended. With a motorcycle it's easier though - they can take a beating.

I guess should that rule be right under "No posting if you can't read." He didn't say he knew anything, he was asking a question. I think a good place to ask a bike question would be in a bike thread, but maybe that's just me. No need to be mean, he wasn't spreading misinformation or pretending to know anything.

Man, I'm tired of people saying if you ride a sport bike you will drop it!!

Please list the facts to follow that statement.
I've been riding just over 10 years now and I'm yet to drop my bike.
It's all about self control and not riding beyond your person ability and the road conditions. I'd admit accidents do happen.
But it's definitely not a fact.
Dre, has given some pretty decent insight to what it's all about. Obviously because he has riding experience.
The best thing I can recommend is to take a riding course before starting to shop for a bike. Two main reasons are to find out whether you enjoy street riding first and second is to gain self confidence in your riding ability by improving your riding skills and accident avoidance.
I wouldn't label anyone 600 sport bike any less safe than another.
There is so mixed opinions on this topic when you read all these posts.
If I read some of these comments when I first decided to take up riding I probably would have been scared or had doubts about riding at all.
