USB Music Folders

My 64GB USB stick was already formatted with FAT32 when I purchased it.

Hmm... so if I have a USB stick bigger than 32GB, it won't format into FAT32? So if Mazda only accepts FAT32 then it's limited to a 32GB stick? But others say that's not true.

I'm very confused.
Yes, USB sticks larger than 32GB can be formatted as FAT32 (but maybe not by the Windows OS, according to @MichalP). Most USB sticks that you purchase will already be formatted as FAT32.

Yeah I missed it and I still can't find this. Do you have a link?
See page 2-26 here:

Windows native formatting limits you to 32GB (as @MichalP said), but there are tools that let you go larger. See: How to Format USB Drives Larger Than 32GB With FAT32 on Windows

RedBaron shows in his posting about the Mazda Connect manual that the max. volume size is 2TB with FAT32.
I myself use a 64GB USB stick without any problem.

I'm talking about my 2016.5 GT. I'm not going to dig it out, but I'm quite sure that the manual for my CX said 32gb max size for the flash drive. Perhaps a larger flash drive can be used but it has to be partitioned.

All I know is that since I bought the CX new back in 2016, I've been using 32gb/FAT32 with no issues. All work as intended and I'm STILL using the original firmware.

The above also applies to my 2016 MX-5, same infotainment same performance, no issues. All work as intended.

The only difference between the OEM firmware and what I'm using now, is that I applied the hack that allows the touchscreen to operate while in motion in both of my Mazdas.

Probably there is a difference between the first and the second generation infotainment system?

Have a 2019 CX-5 and am trying to get Artist folders to show up on my USB stick. Formatted as FAT32 and has ~30 GB of songs. Root of USB contains folders for each Artist and then all songs are directly in each of those folders without any Album folder, but when inserting in car, only a root folder appears, not any artist folders and when I click on the root folder it just lists of all songs not in alphabetical order (seems like it displays based on order it was copied to USB). What file directory format do I have to use so I can browse songs by artist on the USB? All songs contain the artist name in the metadata also. thank you!

Your setup is working in my car/USB stick and it also worked in both my CX-3s with the "older" infotainment system.

We have owned the 2024 Mazda CX5 for about five months now and rarely use it but I have given up on trying to manipulate the USB flash drives I use in my Chevy pickup aftermarket stereo and also my garage stereo. So, I spend more time just moving songs from my computer storage individually to a flash drive and have that as the dedicated flash drive for the Mazda...... I have quit trying to figure it out.... it's not worth my time and from what I have read, there is no solution which is NOT a big deal. The ironic part of all this is that my aftermarket stereo in my 1995 Chevy is an el cheapo "dual" unit that I bought as a temporary stereo in a sports car and removed it to install a better stereo. The Chevy truck OEM unit had two fuses, and one "leaked" which was typical thus draining the battery. So I removed that and installed the cheap Dual unit with low expectations. It works so well, great sound, uses the existing four OEM speakers, and the flash drive does not go back to the beginning each time the truck is shut off but remembers and picks up where it left off.... I understand that new technology may be a great thing most of the time, but sometimes I wonder if "old school" still is the way to go.... ???? We still really like the Mazda.....

That USB "new technology" is working flawlessly in three Mazda cars (CX-3 and CX-5). Therefore I assume there must be something wrong with your USB sticks (incompatible) or infotainment setup.

Maybe you can try your USB sticks in another Mazda? Maybe at the dealer?

Oh... don't get me wrong.. the USB works flawlessly in the Mazda... but it is quirky when it comes to how you want it to play, the order etc.... and I have a solution for it by setting up my flash drives with select music instead of folders in my case... I will use it more when we finally get around to actually driving the 5 on a more regular basis but we bought it for longer road trips.... and just haven't been able to do that so far...I think the display and folder ogranization in my Kia is easier to use. My 1995 C1500 is my daily driver and it still has the best sound of all the vehicles I own.... and is the easiest to use as well.... it's all a matter of perspective I guess and for the most part, we don't listen to a lot of music anyway... One thing I need to learn/study is pairing my cell phone so I can use the cell phone GPS ..... right now I have a gooseneck cell phone holder that we use in conjunction with its GPS and that works well... again... it's just a lack of experience and will take some time to learn all this and make it more comfortable to use.... PS my son also owns a CX 5 but they just don't listen to music from flash drives.... I have run every level of music technology in cars from no radio at all, to a simple AM in the 60s, to AM FM stereo, with an 8 track added later on, then to cassettes, CDs, and now I have ripped all my CDs to digital and have them stored on an external drive on one of my servers..... Never got into the Sirius scene.... it's all good....have a good one....

I'm betting that you are selecting "Artist" as the category list, rather than "Folder"...

I have noticed this type of behavior with mp3 media, but I don't remember the exact details, I think it might have been a CD burned w/mp3s, and it didn't want to get all the way into the folder structure, mostly the 'top layer'.

I'm a little disappointed the sirius too, but it works great out in the boonies where I am, and they do have talk radio, etc, things besided music.
I wish that XM weather were easier to get.

I know part of the problems is with the "ripping" that I do on my one main computer/server..... Once in a while it will bring along the "artist"information and also a picture of everything including the song names, but more times than not, the ripping process ends, and all I have are "track 1" and "track 2" etc.... just no information comes along when the rip is done... so I create a new folder on the desktop and name it by the artist.... I also have to go back in and change the name of the ripped tunes in the folder to something like "track 1" to "track 1 A"...... and if I don't do that, there may be several songs on the flash drive called "track 1".... and they cannot be identified in any way.... so you slap it in, and listen... It's just not a perfect world..... Now I don't argue or research much about this... and probably should... as always there has to be different software packages to rip a CD ..... Is anyone aware of some software that RIPS CDs to digital ????and brings along the artist's name and pictures?

I rip my cds to the hard drive, then I use Merge MP3 (not a sponsor) to make it all one track. Then, I use media human converter to change to mp3. I have mediamonkey too, which I've used to add album art. No doubt, once I figure it out, I will be able to cut some corners.

Why would you want your songs to all be one track? That would be the most annoying and unusable media library ever.
