parts question

With any luck, I'll have my car sold this week and be able to start shopping for a Protege5 this weekend. I've found one online that looks to be in good shape, with one exception. In the pictures, it looks like there's a small tear in the passenger side dash pad (number 7 in the attached figure, part no. BJ0J-65-360-65).

I've done a google search for the part number to get an idea of price of that part so I can negotiate the price down appropriately, but haven't found anyone who sells it. I'm guessing it's a dealer-only part.

Any suggestions of places that sell trim pieces online for a good price?

Mazda calls that a crash pad. MSRP is $114.30. Your part # is wrong as well.

BJ0J-60-360 65

It fits 01-03 Protege's and P5's...

Its an absolute b**** to replace.

Try Onlinemazdaparts.com (for new) or Mazmart.com (used)

I guess writing the number down wrong does make it harder to find.

Why is it such a b**** to replace? Do I have to remove the whole dash to replace it?

You could always remove it, cover it with fabric of some type (something that matches the rest of your interior) and reinstall. Some guys have done their door panels that way. It would be much cheaper!

It would be cheaper, but since I haven't bought the car yet, if I can negotiate the price down to cover the cost of the part, I'm not so worried about cheaper.

It does sound like it's not the easiest part to replace, but I've definitely done worse jobs before. (famous last words)

There's gotta be a salvage yard that has that piece available for cheap. Good luck.

There is no easy way. I used a multiple screw drivers and acrobatic arm and wrist movements to get it off. Replacing it is much easier

Alright, so it's a complete PITA to replace, but how long would you estimate the job takes start to finish? How many hours labor would a dealership bill for? (I'd definitely do the work myself, I just want to have an accurate number to throw out for negotiations when I buy.)

I've never done the replacement myself, but I can't imagine that a dealership would charge you more than an hour of labor.

The *correct* way to do it is to remove the dash. I'm not sure how Mazda would charge based off of that.. Toyota wants 10 hours for a dash removal/reinstall IIRC.

Best thing I can suggest is call a Mazda dealer and ask the service department.. :)

Yeah that figures. Like when you have a 50 cent plastic clip break off of your distributor, and they want you to buy an entirely new $450 distributor, because they don't sell the clip by itself (happened to a buddy's old Nissan Sentra).

I take back what I said - maybe it will be like 10 hours of labor (smash)

I've replaced mine with a custom molded one with a 5.6" screen. It took me more than an hour. I'm sure it would be much quicker if I did it again.
