New strut time

My P5 hitting near 170 000km and it sounds like a rickety old spring bed going over bumps. Has been on too many dirt roads!

So I think its time for all new struts. Just so happens Canadian Tire has the Monroe Quick Struts on sale this week, has anyone had any experience with those? Any advice on changing struts on the P5? I know changing some things on this car are ridiculous LIKE THE ALTERNATOR . (boom06)

I just did springs/struts myself. I opted for the Tokico kit from ProtegeGarage.com. 500.00 bucks for all 4 springs & Tokico Blues. Can't go wrong IMO ! As far as the install, I'd give this advice:

1. Soak everything with wd40 or PB blaster etc. several times before you dive in, you'll be happy you did.

2. Order yourself 4 new end links, I had to cut all 4 of mine off. They were worn out as well (and all my clunking noises are now gone!)

3. Don't forget to buy/rent a spring compressor

4. I had to remove the pass. side rear caliper to get one strut bolt out.... so soak those too. I snapped the caliper bolt and wasted an hour with that mess.

It took me about 6 hours all together, once I gave up on unbolting the endlinks and got out my cutting wheel, it went very easy. Have fun.

Turns out Monroe doesn't make the preassembled "quick struts" for P5's. Will be sending it to the shop now :(

make sure you have a big F*cking breaker bar, the BIGGEST one you can get.

DO NOT use monroe, they suck. Use tokico, as stated, but this requires new springs; or kyb, which will be great with stock springs. $239.

I beg to differ. They're no tokico, but for the price they are good quality - I have them installed on my car with no issues whatsoever. Plus they come with a lifetime warranty, and since Monroe recommends replacing struts every 50,000 miles, I get new struts for free every 50,000 miles (yes, I called them and replacement at 50,000 miles is covered).

I know several people with KYBs who say they're nice, but they wear out very quickly.

I've used Monroe's, the top of the line Sensor ones, and they sucked. I guess it's all in what you're used to. KYB's should have a lifetime warranty, too, btw.

Aren't the stock struts made by KYB?

Touche ;). Word on the street is the stock ones are made by KYB, but I still stand by the Monroe Sensatracs. But I drive gently (my sedan LX 2.0 is my daily driver), so I imagine that they would definitely lack the quality for more performance-minded individuals.
